grdwalker
hey all, i got myself a MK2 Escort, really good condition, minimal rust but the distributor is rooted, the shaft bushing has gone, which i spose happens with age. anyway, the question, how do i go about putting an electronic dissy in? ive heard an old jap one will work like a sentra/sunny . has anyone else done this and put it on a post somewhere? or even if you have better suggestions that would be golden. thanks. Chrome_GT
Hey, I'm suspecting i have issues with my dizzy too. What are your signs of worn bushing - axial movemnt or side to side looseness?
grdwalker
i took it for a service and tune and they told me then. other than that it just struggles to start when cold
CaMpylobacter
there's nothing at all wrong with points when they're set up properly. lucas dizzys are sweet too. jsut get it rebushed or chuck a good secondhander on there, do pugs, points, condensor, cap, rotor and leads and you're sorted for like, ages. make sure when you change the points that you run them through a bit of roughish fabrics like the little flap of material that overhangs the zips on a pair of workshop overalls, a few times. removes the varnish and shit which will begin to break down after a few days running and give weird misses and stuff. choice. grdwalker
assuming thats the only problem, should it start up first time?
MACKAZ
yuh. if tuned correctly and everything is in order, no reason why it shouldnt
forced
i took it for a service and tune and they told me then.other than that it just struggles to start when cold If it's struggling to start when cold but not when hot........ then chances are it's a fuel prob rather than ignition. Sounds to me like it was too hard for the place you took it to. Maybe take it somewhere else for a second opinion. What do the spark plugs look like? nismo.capri
there's nothing at all wrong with points when they're set up properly. That all depends when they start to bounce. If I'm not mistaken all points bounce it's just a matter of when. Vizard says that testing a few different pinto points some of them start to bounce at 5500 rpms and start costing power. make sure when you change the points that you run them through a bit of roughish fabrics like the little flap of material that overhangs the zips on a pair of workshop overalls, a few times. removes the varnish and shit which will begin to break down after a few days running and give weird misses and stuff. Some good advise! I've had that problem before and it's furkin annoying when you don't know why the miss is still there after changing everything. slipsittin
That all depends when they start to bounce. If I'm not mistaken all points bounce it's just a matter of when. Vizard says that testing a few different pinto points some of them start to bounce at 5500 rpms and start costing power. Vizard was only building higher reving engines for strip and circuit. I have Dynoed engines with points and had awesome results until the base plate movement causes issues when the vacume starts altering. Vizard is over rated when he gives advise as he gets royalties from sales of many aftermarket parts also. His books have good advise but at the end of the day are only one mans opinion. Make your own minds up and remember all of us do things differently with the equipment we have available. Its to easy to read info and go off on the wrong track because the person who wrote the book or article has only mentioned what (at their level of expertise) they think is all that is needed to know. Thats why I sometimes may seem like a dick for asking stuff and telling what I know or have found......But this is the reason we here at OLD SCHOOL are getting good feedback. Chrome_GT
GRDWALKER - did you sort the starting issues? I found out that my issues were caused by my coil. Worth checking out
slipsittin
Run a GT40 bosch resin filled coil and all your problems will be better solved on that side. DO NOT RUN MSD BLASTER COILS ON THE LUCAS OR BOSCH DISSY SYSTEMS!!!!!!! They run the wrong resistance in the primary side. Corey.
grdwalker
good to see replies and some good info. being an air force boy i have had a fair bit of study and work over the last week and a bit, so not much looked at, talking to one of the SGTs who is an encyclopaedia of knowledge, im probably gonna take in the dissy to the workshop and get the machinists to have a look and see if they can manufacture anything. total cost: 1doz (hopefully. and the materials)
