esky 73 Posted September 28, 2008 Share Posted September 28, 2008 can anyone tell me how to check the efficiency of a waterpump, i am having over heating issues with the ca, i have done the usuall things, flush, waterwetter, brand new ali rad, new electric fan but still cant stop it getting hot, 80 to 100 degrees, the rad is a aftermarket ca18det. when i slow down at lights or stop the temp will come down slightly but motorway driving and it creeps up, i am a bit lost! I wouldnt worry till over 90°.. even closer to 100° but maybe thats just me used to 100° pintos. Whats the angles like on your pipes? Could be effecting flow. That would indicate that your waterpump is working extremely well. I think you have an airflow issue. Fans are useless at motorway speeds so you can probably discount that. The other thing that could be happening is that you are passing the water through the block too fast at motorway speeds.Do you have a thermostat or some other water flow restrictor in place? NewGuy had simlar troubles in his dolomite a while back if you guys remember. he was running a thermostat but it didn't have the foot on it to block the bypass when it opened, so it was effectively only cooling at low engine rpm. same will happen if you have no thermostat at all. plus, gven it's only getting up around 80 degress i think you've jsut got a lack of thermostat, or one that's opening far too soon, or not closing at all. does it take ages to show temperature off a cold start? the reason it creeps up on the motorway is due to the fact that the engine is making enough enrgy to heat the hole cooling system, rather tan being overcooled around town etc etc. Hopefully you understand my ramblings. esky 73 Posted September 29, 2008 Author Share Posted September 29, 2008 thanks guys, had'nt thought about the timing issue, and no thermostat, the rad hoses are all good, no kinks at all in the top hose and a very gradual bend in the bottom hose, the temps i quoted are just at normall road speeds 100kph (ish) start to give it a hiding especially in the taller gears and it goes over a hundy, i have'nt kept going to see just how high it gets as i get scared over a hundy degrees, thanks again, i got some things to look at now Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Hemi Posted September 29, 2008 Share Posted September 29, 2008 not running a thermostat can also cause massive flow problems if it has a bypass as the foot cuts the connection between two levels (if that makes sence) and pretty much stops all water from moving , this could mean the block or residual flow from rad is sufficiant druing idling but goes to nothing up higher (and of course the motor is working harder) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

NewGuy Posted September 29, 2008 Share Posted September 29, 2008 Get a stat Makes a huge difference with the flow etc. THough i do not no how many actually have the foot or if a Ca has a foot etc etc. But you have to run a stat, it not only bad for cooling bad bad for the engine on initial start up. esky 73 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Share Posted September 30, 2008 ok, thermostat in, the stat was a standard jobby, 85 dergrees, my temp gauge must be fairly accurate cos the temp rose up to 85 then came back to 70, drove from west to penrose on the motorway just cruising and it got up to 90, gave it a squirt for a bit 4000rpmish and the temp came back to 70-75, so i guess this would indicate not enough airflow? my escort has'nt had the holes drilled in the front panel like some others, but a definate improvement with the stat, thanks again guys! and also the mixture is all good if anything its a bit rich Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
