Hemi
yea being that they rotate at some immensly high speeds i say you be stupid to do it without proper balancing equipment , we've all seen pic of what happens what they fail at full noise
sentra
its cheap as fuck to get a driveshaft outfit to shorten one as opposed to lengthen / diffirent diameter.
Guest vvega
Hmmm Fully gayLucky my Brother in law is a stainless welder. duno how that is relevent and nethier will the cert man to modd a drive shaft you have to be a reconised driveshaft builder and be willing to certify your work then if it dose snap and people die they have someone to put in jail
EFI_LC
Im with the rest here... you can get away with some stuff on the dirt in the back paddock but stuff like this needs experience and someone to take ownership of it. It would be bad enough kill or injure yourself but what about the people nearby you may hurt. Remember in 4th which is usually 1:1 ratio it spins at the engine revs and even cruisin round town it could be doind 2000rpm or 30-35 revolutions a second
NewGuy
Hmmm sounds alright i guess So i got to find a Driveshaft Shop In Tauranga. I think my best option is to pull the shaft out of my dads car and get my one shorten to this length?
sentra
lay under car / put in on ramps/ so its at rideheight. put a driveshaft in the gearbox (right hard up in it) put another on the diff flange hold them next to eachother scribe a line though both in the same place perpendicular to shaft describe what you did to the driveshaft maker specifcally tell him that it was right hard up in box as it wants to be ~10mm shorter so as the diff moves around it doesnt bottem out into the box. shizzl
definately not an area that needs to be done on the cheap,ie in the shed and balanced with hose clamps(seen it done before) ive always just measured from the face of the diff flange to the end of the gearbox, gave that measurement to an engineer and hey presto, new balanced driveshaft for around $150.. ADL do a good job too,but theyr more like $350 from memory to change yokes over etc.. cheap to just shorten it though..im gonna have to do the same soon.. shizzl
yeah a hoop...a driveshaft hoop, goes under your driveshaft mounted to the body so if the front yoke fails for some reason it stops the driveshaft from dropping onto the road and digging in causing your car to polevault into the air destroying itself and anyone else around it..sounds fun ae.. LAN_KILLA
Seriously, dont do it yourself... Quite a few years back now, there was an incident on an Auckland Motorway, where a truck suffered driveshaft failure, due to an incorrectly lengthend driveshaft. The truck spat the shaft out the side while doing 90kph, shaft went onto the otherside of the motorway, and impaled a guy in the head in his ute, the ute cab was serverly shortened as was the guys life. Simply put, Never mess with a rotating mass, always get a pro to do it.
