modifying cortina gt

mk2 gt

Recommended Posts

i am looking at buying a mk2 gt cortina and am considering, modifying the engine to get a little more power out of it, what would be the best way to do this with say a budget of $1000 - $1200 if its possible?

also what are some places in auckland that do really good reliable work for cortinas?

The 2l conversion isnt the easiest of conversions. For the effort you might aswell put a modern Jappa engine in.

Get a 1600, and a mandrel bent exhaust system, 32/36 or 38/38, extractors and new plugs leads etc. Thatll prob be about 1g.

yeah dunno how hard a pinto into a cortinaII is... but can't be that much harder than an escort surely? which is a peice of piss.

but yeah 1600.. all good.. a V6capri carb is a goody.. extractors, cold air ind, ported head. Actually.. my mates got a fully ported big valve 1600 head for sale I think. Buy that.

Yeah its not that much harder. Gotta do all the same plus basically make a whole new sump. mk1/2 cortina etc need front bowl. So new sump, pickup and a new dipstick hole basically. Not the end of the world. Not the easiest job either to do at home. Rummours are that the starter of the 5speed will hit the steering linkages also.

the gt i am looking at is 1500 does that sound right?

i will need to sell my current car 1996 libero to be able to fund the engine mods for this car  it will depend on how much i sell my car for hoping to get $2000

when you say 32/36 38/38 what do you mean by that?

it's a 1600 head so no.. or a least? I dont think it will. ? I don't know anything about the 1500 cortina pushy.

But you could always drop in a 1600kent, nice and easy and good powerup.

I think around $500-600. She's a wee beast of a head.

with a good carb.. like a V6capri or I can sell you an injection setup..

you could get around 115 hp. Thats enough to make your wee car boogie.

Then later down the track just put some nos on it, straight in the carb.

i just spoke to a guy about using a v6 capri carby and he said it would work but anything below 3k of revs it would be gutless untill you get right up the revs then you will get power. he said the better option to do would be to use a 2L cortina carby if i am not going to heavily mod the engine which i wont at this stage

First mod. Ditch the 1500 peice of shit engine and buy a 1600 crossflow off trademe for about $500. Then get some Ghia or sport extractors and go from there. 38/38 will be sweet on a 1600. 1500 maybe not.

Maybe you should do some research around the net and this forum about 1500 precrossflows and 1600 kent crossflow engines. Will help you decide.
