1600 Xflows

I have been told that some 1600s have big valves some don't... didn't 1600s only come in the sports(mk2)/GTs (mk1) and the ghias? ... i am told the ghias and the gts have big valve heads, so which don't? and how can you tell?

i'm looking at geting a 1600 built for my car....

chances are the bores will be worn out so the guy who will be doing it said, if it needs boring usually they just go straight to 60though... also will be getting porting, cam grind etc.

i have decided to just put this 1600 i have into my car.. but to save time and money i am going to get the cam reground and maybe change the pistons to 1300 ones to up the compression... but i h ave a few questions..

The mechanic that is helping me do the work suggested maybe a GT cam grind... but i thought i might want a bit more than that.. i am planning onrunning it with the cam and pistons then later removing the head and getting it ported polished etc to get the most out of the cam and stuff but i am waiting till ican afford it.. can anyone reccomend some cam grinds or something? i have heard of BCF3, 234 and mild race, etc cams.. and what do you ask for when you go into the machinist? that you want a bcf3 grind.....

secondly... the 1300 pistons i am getting from repco.... and i only need the standard 1300 XFlow pistons right? not rods right?

Cheers

yeah that would be sweet aye... so that would be slassed as like a mild race cam right? how does it go in your engine? what else have you had done? i'm just going to use the 32/36 weber that is standard should be sweet aye? might need re jetyting when i get the head done... although i might get twin carbs if i can afford..

your 32/36 will be sweet and you wont have to re-jet it as long as its in good nick and tune.

for the cam try and track down a engine rebuilder that has played with crossflows before and many oldschool fellas have. i took my cam to Glendene engine rebuilders and the guy -John had 2 or 3 other crossflows there being worked on. they can do various grinds including GT and up...

If you stick in some valves that are bigger than 1600 xflow ones you will have to mod your new pistons cause the valves WILL be hitting them.. just sumtin to keep in mind...

yeah i have decided on a BCF2 grind i think and brand new ACL 1300Xflow pistons coutesy of matt at repco for $140.. i'm goign to stay with the 32/36 and the standard head for now... and when i get the cash i'll take the head off or get a new one and get it ported... i got a quote for around $1100 .. for a good porting job which i will get a flow sheet and stuff with... does anyone here in auckland have expierience swapping the pistons in an XFlow...? cos iw o uldn't mind a hand if the guy thats helping me dosn't have time to do the pistons with me...

Cheers

Follow Mr Haynes an you'll be right  Just mind you dont try and force your gudgeons out, sometimes they can be a bit of a mission and then the next minute they will slide free, take your time so that you dont leave any marks on them. Use plenty of grease/oil when putting things back together. Use the right torqe on all of the bolts etc. Take your time putting the sump gaskets on otherwise you will end up with a leaking main oil seal like I did  Pretty much take everything possible apart and recondition it while you have the engine out and apart, saves running into problems later on. Get your cylinders honed or at least take off the lip that forms up the top and then roughen up the cylinder walls before putting your new pistons + rings in. Flush out the block and get new frost plugs. Howcome you aren't going to do anything to your head at the same time? It won't cost much to re-seat the valves using a drill and some valve grind paste.

And yea who cares about the cert? Only a escort owner or ex escort owner is going to know that a 1600's block is an inch higher than a 1300's, so who is going to be able to tell that its a 1600? Just say you reconditoned the 1300 and now it goes alot better. If that fails say that you were told by a mechanic that you wouldnt need to get it certed as escorts came out with factory 1600's using the exact same everything else so why would it require a cert? Thats what I'm going with

haha well yeah the plan was just to chuck the 1600 in standard..then save and get another 1600 worked and put it in...it would cost me almost...but then the mechanic that is helping me was like.. we should take the cam out and get it reground.. so i wa slike... fuck i may aswell chuck some 1300 pistons in to while i'm at it... then later oni can take the head off or get another one ported etc...

yeah jerm i got a bcf3 in my esky and it goes hard man...... alot of people go for the bcf2.... my mate has a 1300 gt and he had a bcf2.... if u want it i can get it for you... but the idle of a bcf3 is very rough and mine idles at about 1600 rpm any lower and i could stall....... if u want a hot cam u will want twin webers or dellorto side draughts bcuz wen u got those u get a huge kick from the cam as it starts to work higher up in the revs....... :D

kent bcf2...... mild road cam.....2000 - 6000 power band......6.62mm cam lift.....9.74mm / 9.59mm valve lift.........270 Degrees duration

kent bcf3.....Sports 'R' Road/Rally........2500 - 7000 power band.......7.15mm valve lift......10.47mm valve lift........284 Degrees duration...

the bcf3 is alot quicker and it is road usable.... my escort is extremly easy to drive even with the cam in it.... i'm not sure...... u can get the cams ordered in from an engine rebuilder i think.... i brought the engine off a guy hu had already got it profesionally rebuilt and i didn't get a chance to ask where he got the cam from.....i dunno how much it would cost brand new maybe ummmmm guessing 400-500 i dunno......
