  1. Do RWD 4age have sump gaskets?? Mines a genuine rwd from ae 86 blue top 16valve Have rang toyota but computer not showing anything up, guy said one may just be formed by gasket goo!! Have checked car but cant tell if there is one on.(dont want to investiage to far so dont ruin it if there is one.) Sorry to open another thread but couldnt find any thing useful in search. cheers
  2. needing to modify an escort x-member to fit into my cortina. Stated slotting holes and old mounts have got messy. Now have figured I need to mount x-member a tad further back so have drilled out the welds to remove old mounting brackets. I plan to get new tidy ones made up that fits. Will this be ok for a cert?? My engine mounts are off the chassis rails so not attached to the engine x-member!! Cheers
  3. Nice write up mate. Well done on starting to build it back up. Im a cortina nut, got a mk1 one myself. Watching this thread with interest to see how it goes Good luck
  4. Cheers for that Gaz. No doubt that infowill be of use. Here is a few photos of the Taper Im trying to find??
  5. I wondered if they were!! Would be great if you could get them to me cheers
  6. Looking at making up a sleeve for my Mk1 Cortina steering arms that accepts the escort or sierra lower arm balljoint. Its all part of the rack and pinion mission. Urgently needed is the size of the taper on the escort or sierra lower arm ball joint. (i'm under the impression its the same) Many thanks in Advance. Greg
  7. ^^^^ What he said, they are good guys. I got one for the Mk1 Cortina done there last year was around the $100 mark There is another place in CHCH but cant remember there names

Sorry Valiant that was ment to be a NOW a firm believer, Not NOT. Wow one letter give sentence a totally different meaning!! Yeah its just a case of getting the right pieces....I think I'm going to be pullinh the whole engine out again soon!! I didnt want to have to come to that realisation haha Crazy_Rich, the other guy who was talking on here and he's got the struts for sale. Yeah mk1 & 2 tinas share the same chassis, was still going to use sierra lower arms instead of esky ones. I think, am probs wrong tho that capri and esky struts are extremely simialar just capri is not as tall but is fatter and stronger!

could it be an option to use Mk1 escort struts with removable steering arms (crazy rich I'm looking at the ones I presume are yours on TM) use escort inserts and have the tops machined to fit my cortina top hats? (Iv used capri inserts for the cortina before so had to have special adaptors machined up to fit the hats! so already have half of it). Then wouldnt need the capri struts?? yeah I'm now a firm believer in that, just R&P has been an after thought once engine conversion has already been done!!

Cheers for the help and info. I have renewed enthusiasm for this now and will keep persevering. Have started the search for parts. One quick question, when you were using Mk2 Cortina struts how did you attach the lower arms?? As sierra arms have ball joint on arms and standard mk2/mk1 cortinas have a seperate lower ball joint that blots on to the bottom of the strut and can be unconnected from the track control arm?? Just asking because I'm imagining it will be a while before I have cash/come across some capri struts considering I sold a pair last year for nearly $500!! Cheers Greg

how much work is involved in modding the sump?? I would imagine a lot of attention given to minimum volumes and baffles etc?? Im thinking of throwing the whole idea in the too hard basket but really want R&P because the steering box is so sloppy Gaz how well does your R&P work did you have any issues with bumpsteer etc when it came to cert time?? Cheers

Hey gaz. Yeah I've read your R&P piece in the tech part. Would have followed it but needed it to be behind the x-member because of the front sump of the 4age. Ive used a kp60 steering rack and then made then taped the rack ends so the cortina tie rods screw can screw in to that so I am able to use the standard cortina struts and ball joints. Drivers wheel is fine just the pasengers one skews out majorly. Mine is a rough follow from a guy in Hamiltons link http://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/showthread.php?1699-starlet-rack-conversion
  13. Hey guys Iv been trying to put rack and pinion in my mk1. Now i have a massive bump steer problem. I have heard of people solving this by using those fancy adjustable bump steer tie rod ends that you can get for silvias or mustangs. Searching on the net I can find plenty of places overseas where to get them but none in nz, Does anyone have any clues or hints? Cheers in advance
  14. I thought that was going to be the case when i started my 4age conversion in my cortina but not the case!! spent a heap more then it would have been to get engine rebuilt!! Good luck with what ever you do
  15. You should be sweet because you can have a 20% engine increase or something. So going from a 1500 to a 1600 equals no cert. but if your mk1 was originally a 1200 then you will need a cert, i needed one when mine was done from a 1200 to 1600xflow!!
  16. So just been chipping away doing bits and bobs. Got legal spring and spring made captive just to put them in and decide its a tad low. So I'm Looking into getting coilovers so I can adjust the height when I want to. My steering box rebuild didnt go that well so want rack and pinion aswel. Just collecting the bits for it all now. IM AFTER A REAR MOUNTED STARLET STEERING RACK SO IF ANYONE HAS ONE PM ME PLEASE. Currently I'm working on a rear diff disc brake set up, just gotta suss hand brake cable and it should be all go. The extractors run down to low and scrape on everything (middle of the road even) and I dont like that so I'm going to lllok and just running the standard exhaust mainfold now, which should stop the scraping but wont be as cool. Pics are just of last weekend I took it for a drive.(mostly just annoying posing car photos). Felt like taking it for a run so chucked in standard diff and brake M/C and was off. I'm retarded forgot to tighten the clutch hoses so lost all fluid, and gear 200m down the road, quick road side bleed and sweet. shortened inserts and new 250mm springs Forgot to mention I put in my double sway bar too Parked down the road after losing gears IMG]http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac312/greggles8/DSCN2662.jpg[/img] Let the girlfriend drive a little on the way home......700m haha she was still stoaked!! Down by the river
  17. good information on the differences between types, red, blue, silver, black HERE http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/phil.bra ... %20RWD.htm
  18. In general is it better to have thicker discs?? or six in one half dozen in the other situation, I ask because check the difference between my cortina and capri ones!! Which would be best to use??
  19. here is some spring on TM http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 847717.htm might be more budget friendly!!!!

    Handbrake

haha dont they all.........i think its just old fords don't wanna go back on the road. mines doin the same!!
  21. Sorry my 1st post didnt make it clear now that I have read it again. I wanted to change the holes on the rotors from 4x114 to 4x108. so that the rotors will fit onto my cortina diff. The diff was set up using mitsi galant rotors and calipers but the guy was using machined spacers/adaptors to centerise the disc, he had also roughly slotted the holes so it would fit and it looked terrible!!!. I run original stud pattern 4x108 so need new rotors. Honda accord rotors measured up basically the same as the mitsi ones but had a much smaller centre hole that will fit the cortina hub way nicer!! Hope that explains it better I took them out to Dwight (chevronracer) in the weekend and he did a sweet job, so much easier when you have the right gears and not just a tape measure and drill
