  1. Yeah I've been constantly rechecking all the electrics and fuel system, making sure everything is secure and not in the way of something that could potentially destroy it. Not keen on a high pressure fuel leak in my boot.. I did invest in a fire extinguisher just in case though.
  2. It's so close to completed I can smell it! The fuel system is done, the tank is back in, headlights are on, the last of the electrics are sorted and the car is 99.6% complete. Unfortunally, the last 0.4 % consists of a cracked thermostat housing and a cable mount. Oh well, there's still tomorrow. Still a few bits of trim / bumper that needs attaching too. Cheap surge tank. Yep, it's screwed to wood. Lushtastic MDF. There it is, all piped up and ready to go. Just need fuel. I decided to upgrade the lights as well, so got some Narva high/low beam semi sealed jobbies. 100W of light up in yo grill!! Still need to upgrade the wiring for the lights though, as the factory shit was never designed for that wattage. And the shitty tstat house. It took me ages to figure out why the fucker was leaking. Coulda had the car fired up tonight otherwise. (Except it still had no fuel) Tomorrow is the day. Hope Repco has a housing in stock, and I need to find someone with a welder that I can borrow for 5 seconds to weld up my cable mount. Then I can go for an exhaustless blat!

    better cooling?

Shroud DOES affect it. Use a shroud! It forces the air through the exchanger. If possible block other free/empty space on the sides etc. as well. It won't adversely affect your open road driving, at least not to a point of concern. If you were really worried about drag co-efficient you'd not have started with a Lancer. Ha yeah thats what I was going for. What I meant is it doesn't affect open road driving. Didn't realize you quoted me before I edited it

    better cooling?

Shroud shouldn't affect it negatively as cars tend to have them stock anyway. It should improve the cooling a bit while stationary as the fan will draw the air over the whole radiator. Is your fan electric or belt? Generally the belt fans are better as they are a lot beefier and can push more air.

    cam regrinds

I vote sidevalve. Not everythings about power for dollar.
  6. Progress is progressing. I've been saying this every week for the past month, but the car should be up and running by the end of the week. Various bits I've had to do is modify the alternator pulley to fit my Bosch alternator on, hunt down a longer fan belt to fit it (why the the fuck does it need a 7 ribbed belt???), sus out the shitload of wires and narrow it down to the ones I need, find places to mount all the electrics and so on and so forth (too hot to type, get off my back!) Got a new accelerator cable made up, ideally it could have been a few cm longer but too bad Surge tank and fuel pump (yet to be installed) And I got this... Yep, a 6 pack of Brakleen and 8 cokes. Hows that for a wacked out pack? Back to the car The heater hose was a bit of a bastard to pipe up, so I had to find some elbow bends (took me ages to find a place that sold them). This is the result. 8 more places to leak from! Woohoo! My rangitastic electrics mounted to the guard. I'm pretty confident I did it correctly, I'm just hoping the ECU agrees and doesn't mind that it's missing a few things. The remains of my battery stand. It's kinda fucked, but it still supports the battery. For now anyway So there it is so far. The engine and all its components are all together and wired / piped up. All that is needed now is a mount of the firewall for the accelerator cable and the rest of the fuel system piped up. The tank is in getting a return pipe welded in so hopefully I get that back soon. As I said, she should be running by the weekend. Heres hoping nothing fucks up at the last minute
  7. ^^ This man speaks the truth. Stock hunter valves ain't that strong and snapping them isn't uncommon. If I remember correctly some sort of masda valve can be fitted. 323 I think.
  8. There's chicks there this time eh? How long are they staying for?
  9. Depending on how aggressive the cam is it is possible that you will lose power in a factory engine. Low end torque will fly out the window, and because the intake/exhaust is too restrictive it won't breath at the top end where the cam makes the power. Chuck it in anyway. Valve springs are a biggie, get some double valve springs if ya can. Bigger / twin carbs, ya may have to upgrade the fuel pump as the mechanical one might not keep up (avengers have this problem), and port the head to get the most out of the cam.
  10. Yeah I've been on the lookout for a better condition shell, but everyone who is selling them asks for a million dollars coz they "wil maek a g00d rota projekt" etc.
  11. Yeah, will probably need to replace half the metal in the car it's that fucked. Makes for some good welding practice at least
  12. Nah, Mark 10-5 stripped the paint off ages ago, and then it's been sitting in my back yard since then. Bare metal + elements = bad. Keegan wasn't keen to let it rust any further. Fuck it's gonna be a shitload of work
  13. Another fuel pump + injector? hooked up to a pushbutton
  14. Don't bother with the kits. All they do is divert the spark from the ign coil to a sparkplug in the tail pipe. Apparently it's not good for the bores as the fuel washes the oil off them. Also only works on carbs A better way would be to inject kerosene into the exhaust and then ignite
  15. A rattlegun should have gotten them off piece of piss. I usually powerbar the fuckers without a problem
  16. I'll hopefully make it to the meet somehow I've already got a surge tank and am hoping I can raid the fuel lines from the cressida, power steering isn't an issue yet as I haven't bothered sticking in the new rack. Exhaust is getting a few mods to it anyway, and yep I'll take note of the thermostat. Cheers man
  17. Mmmkay... Bit of an update on what I have(n't) been doing over the last few weeks. The 4m = not good due to the head problem, so that is now out and contaminating my driveway. In its place is now a 5mge that I found in a spare MX73. The initial goal was to have the car running by new years (a time frame of 3 days), and we actually got a fair bit done. Started removing the engine from the cressy at 10pm, had it out by 4am. up at 8am to remove the engine and everything from the crown. Worked till around 2am getting everything we needed ready. Up again at 8 the next day to swap everything over from the 4m to the 5m (sump, oil pump etc). After day 2 however we ran into a kickdown cable problem and gave up, knowing we wouldn't complete it in time and the car remained sitting for ages with no engine collecting dust. This week I finally sorted the cable and got the engine in, so heres some pics for your enjoyment. Donor Waka Frontless Crown 5MGE hanging from a rope My rangi kickdown link made from the ecu mount And the engine finally in the car. Soooo... Still gotta plug everything in on it, sort the wiring, sort the fuel system, sort the cooling, replace the cam belt, and most likely something else I've overlooked. Yay.
  18. Cheers boes, that makes things a bit easier. Hope I don't stuff it up
  19. Engine conversion is currently under way. No pics due to no camera.
  20. Alrighty... My googling has failed, so can anyone hook me up with a 5mge wiring diagram (from an MX73)? Gotta get the criz going asap but millions of wires = Cheers
  21. Whether the idiot light is working correctly is irrelevant as Kimoko says she still has to jump the car every time coz the alternator ain't charging. [/drunk] Check the brushes though, chances are they are worn to stumps.
  22. It charges fine when cold. Once the engine warms up the alternator seems to stop charging. What do that mean?
  23. Idle sits around 800-900, average stereo and dunno if the AC actually works, never tried it. Engine also feels like its lacking in spark. Feels slow and gutless, almost like it has a miss, and then kicks back in. Figured its related to the lack of charge issue but not 100% sure. Apparently it was still doing that before it got a new engine (last one snapped the cam belt).
  24. I'll check the models I have, but I have a pile of them. Literally a pile. I'd say they need new brushes though. Edit: Yep, got 6 or 7 of them, will check which are good and which aren't
  25. Alrighty. I have a '90 Celica which has a weird charging problem. The battery is new, the alternator's been tested and is sweet, yet sometimes at idle the battery light comes on and although the volt gauge doesn't seem to drop abnormally low the car suffers from lack of electricity. Lights dim, engine cuts out etc. I've checked the earths and they seem all good, Alternator belt is tight, I checked the brushes and they look like they've been replaced not too long ago. Any ideas what could be going on?
