  1. If all goes to plan I'll pay for this heap in a few days. The current owner is a good mate who gave up on the truck some time ago. He's offered it to me at a very fair price so I hacked it out of waist high thistles a couple of days ago, found enough wheels to get it in the air, and got the brakes un-seized enough to get it rolling...in a straight line. Hopefully I'll get an ignition key this week which will mean I can unlock the steering. I'll get some batteries and see if she'll run. I know little about diesel engines so this could be fun. She's a 6.5 turbo V8, and despite looking pretty haggard is quite sound in the body and chassis. One of the worst things is the wheel size - they're 16.5 inch. Those are 33x12.5x16.5 tyres on both the wheels you see. The truck makes otherwise big tyres seem small. I'm on an island where WoFs aren't a thing, but I have no tools except my carpentry gear with me so I will be at the mercy of others. So far people have all said I'm mad (the truck has a reputation as a bit of a lemon around here), but they've all offered me gear too. Nice.
  2. Thanks heaps to all of you for the advice and goodwill. We tried magnets, but yeah, but nah. After a bit the owner was prepared to take off the other hub and.good axle (which turned out to be a breeze) and incredibly fortunately for us there was a straight aperture through the diff head, so after scavenging some rusty re-bar from a paddock (and a mallet) we eventually managed to get the broken axle out. It was a mission due to the flailing end having torn the internal diff housing in a few places, seriously constricting the axle's exit path. There were roller bearings everywhere. The wheel bearing probably collapsed, and then the axle shaft broke. Lordy. Runamuck is correct. Everything (apart from gathering food) is harder here. Thanks again all. It's genuinely appreciated
  3. Thanks Max. The diff is what I'd call semi floating axles with no diff head cover. It's a 2001 build that has been on Chatham Island since new (200,000kms ago) so everything on it is hard work! It's a five stud flatbed
  4. 70 series Land Cruiser. A rear axle has snapped roughly where the inner axle/wheel bearing was. It's a live, solid diff. We have very limited tools, but can probably get access to a welder if we really tried. Does anyone have any advice for its extraction? Ta
  5. Looking for a ~ 3m3 tipper to use on a steep building site for few weeks in south Wellington (mid April to early May). Has anyone got something that'll carry about 3 cubic metres that they'll rent to me? We don't have to use it on-road, but it'd be be a bonus if we could. 90% of what we do will be off-road, but it's steep and slippery so decent brakes and a good parking brake are essential. We could manage with a loader if no trucks are available Thank you
  6. WRT petrol smell: The fuel tanks have a tendency to rust out at the top. The solution is to remove the tank (easy job) and then probably use the POR15 tank sealer product (which is expensive but genuinely good).
  7. I can help, but only until November, and unfortunately the rent isn't cheap. Landfill Road, Owhiro Bay. The better news is that the workshop is quite well equipped (drill press, lathe. press, compressor, workbench, vice, power, lighting, toilet etc.) If you want to know more PM me your number and I'll give you a call
  8. There's also some other products similar to the Wurth canisters (which are indeed awesome). Total Bodyshop in the Hutt stock one that I've used, but I can't remember its name. You'll need a special gun for either though... which I can lend you if you need, but they're only $46 new
  9. It'll take me a while to get photos as they're on a hard drive that's not where I am, but yours (in the last few photos) looks a bit worse TBH... but not all that much worse. Do get your head up inside the rear wheel arches and check the rear screen drains for rust/blockages. It's a hard one to spot sometimes. The only other tip I could give you is to fit new seals to the windscreen wiper stalks (in 5 years when it's going back together.... LOL!). They're cheap as anything but do fail.... and as you know getting the heater and dash out is a HUGE mission
  10. Holy moley man. That is seriously cool... and for what it is it looks remarkably rust free. The front jacking points are usually toast. So much win! And is that a Lexus LS I spy?
  11. Approved Also: Aidan may have a 3.9:1 diff head for it as it's most likely got a 4.1:1 in there now
  12. Will also most likely attend for the first 15 mins (unfortunately I have another meeting @ 7.30pm)
  13. I haven't read all of the words... but have you sorted the strut tops? If not I think I have a pair of unused 15 year old Nolathane NOS adjustable camber/caster ones in my shed. If you could genuinely use them ping me a PM and I'll check them to be certain they're VL ones (I can't remember)
  14. The only 'cooling' is opening windows and insulation. The leadlights will let in winter afternoon sun, but not much in summer. The windows will probably let in morning sun, but I hardly ever get up there before 11am so that's speculation. Regardless, it's a lovely place to be and I am really happy sitting about up there 'neath the trees. Thanks for all the kind words and likes everyone. It's appreciated.
  15. @Archetype gave me a hand to get a couple of $150 TradeMe triple glazed leadlights down to Wellington, and today I finally got a chance to mount them into the ceiling. It was a bit tricky to get a decent photo with the phone, so there's a picture of the other side of the ceiling too.
  16. Cripes 10m2 is small! The cladding is on though. Next the sarking, purlins and eventually the roof.
  17. Sorry for such a tardy response. I have hardly been on OS in November: WRT timber dropsaw: I have a 305mm De-Walt on an EPIC stand that I am not using again until late January You're welcome to it Beav. It's at my south coast lock-up, but the stand is big so perhaps it's best I drop it to you one week night (on my ute). Holla at me WRT metal cut-off saw: Can assist with a 400mm unit should you still need one Kicker. Collection from Owhiro Bay on a week night (next to Pinkies), or perhaps if you're close to Beaver I can kill two birds etc. with a delivery In all cases - no payment or koha expected. You're both fine chaps and it's just the OS way... but please PM me and be prepared to wait a couple of days for reply ... or text if you have my number for a quicker response. Sorry, just lunacy busy at the moment
  18. ^ Yup. It's going outside on the (yet to be) paved outdoor dining area. Wanna giz a hand to carry it up there? Lol In other news: @Big Value Buddy gave me a hand on Sunday, so here he is doing Big Value kind of stuff. Things are moving in the right direction, but it'll be a struggle to get the roof on before Christmas, however the wrap is largely done, the S/S flashing are largely on and we've clad probably 40% of the exterior. We'll do our best to get the roof started in December though!
  19. Yup. It will be less than a minute walk from the house, but the house is a couple of years away. The contractors are cutting an earth driveway towards the house site in November. I should be able to 4x4 to within a minute walk to the cabin in December. That. Will. Be. Awesomeness:-)
  20. The cabin is 56 metres above the water. For the avoidance of doubt: I've been trimming and placing the rafters by myself, but I got help to carry them up to the work site. TBH I am getting a bit old to be lugging 40-60 kg lengths the entire way up there
  21. Getting the rafters up by myself has been a mission, but it's about a third done.
  22. Those things are remarkably capable off-road. I had one exactly the same. They crawl, and wade well. They didn't put the alternator right up the top of the engine for no reason yiou see. They put it up there so the cabin computer still had electricity, and as they put that under the driver's seat it was the first thing to go bang when you got wet ankles. Oh the horrid dash rattles, blend flaps, aircond, air suspension, electric brake booster and cylinder liners though. Kisses
