  1. I'm now thinking of fitting some bosch HC 715 coils, bosch bim124 ignitors and setting up a wasted spark system on the leading plugs and the trailing plugs running via the dizzy cap. From all I have read so far it sounds like a bloody good upgrade. It looks simple enough with the most time consuming bit to be keeping it looking tidy. So I shouldn't go buying leads till I know the length with the new setup. Lots of rotorhoe looking girls about at campsite right now for the new year. Viva was too quiet to arouse them. If only they could see my shiny alternator..
  2. Now looking out for a wrecked fxgt on side of road to grab the leads from....
  3. I remember spending bloody ages deciding between orange leads and black leads at Halfords. I went in to get a basic set and left brother out waiting in car. When I saw they had orange leads that would suit my orange 12a in the brown chevette it became the mega hard decision! I went orange and didn't look back. Eagle do them in black eh? I'll measure the resistance of my current leads too. cheers.
  4. I'll have a look, take some measurements and get back to ya Zac. My coil leads are a bit longer than standard rx7 ones as the coils are mounted further away. So if the insulation is the main difference then how do companies claim such great things of their products? I imagine resistance doesnt make fuck all difference when it comes to a 20,000 volt jolt?
  5. is there more to the posh ones than just having more insulation? resistance ?
  6. My old 12A leads need replacing before I start mucking about changing plug heat ranges. (see my Viva thread) I know my dizzy is good, the coils are good (but I'll double check them again) but the leads are just old ones that a mate gave me ages ago. A while back I was about to buy a set of top gun leads when a autosparky friend who races a series 3 rx7 in the pro7 class told me to just get some Bosch leads as the actual carbon core is no bigger on the posh leads, just the insulation is thicker. Is this true? What should one look for with buying leads and has anyone got good experience with any brands? Is it just a bit of a scam- all these big 10mm leads etc? I may also look into changing the leading coil for a 2nd gen rx7 setup in the future but for now I just want the stock setup to be in good order.
  7. They aint overly soiled but again I have not done many miles in the car really. Mainly town miles. These are the correct heat range for a standard 12A. My engine has maybe 50bhp more at 5 psi of boost so not a lot. My worry is that if I go one range colder then I'll get more fouling. I'll start a new thread in techy section as I'm also thinking that my old old leads should go in the bin... but all these posh extra thick leads out there?....
  8. Yeah thats better. And yeah- the car does sink somewhat when I hop on and do my best "Am I making you feel horny" pose. I best watch my pie intake.. Any good tips on how to clean off carbon deposits on plugs? Anything I can spray on or dip them in that will clean them as I have read recently that its now considered a bad idea to wire brush plugs clean.
  9. Chris- could you PM or text me some prices of what you can get. You told me ages ago but I'm sure things change or maybe theres some deals to be had.
  10. Yeah- well I think its like the Nelson branch of the NZ Vintage vauxhall club but they have younger cars along. Its odd but I guess it just goes along with the general underdog place of Vauxhall against the likes of Ford but there isn't really any NZ wide Vauxhall club or very little info of anything as such. The main one Ive found is really just Auckland based.
  11. Even vaster bulk now having just got back from 2 days in the rain over below farewell spit. Oh boy did I eat, drink tea, coffee, eat, watch the rain. Your picture is not showing up for some reason Napoleon? And damn I'm curious... If my plugs are fouling from town driving then hotter plugs would sort that eh? I'm gonna clean my plugs and then try not to drive the car like a big girls blouse to avoid fouling them up again. I know that it was not missing or pre-igniting when we first took it up for a good ragging after getting it road legal. The plugs were new and clean. I'm using NGK iridium plugs which I have always used with really good results. Might get some more once I know which way to go temp wise. I get them from sprakplugs.co.uk and they only cost $12 each. Find someone heading this way and get them to bring em over. Brothers coming over in Feb..
  12. Cheers. I was not sure. I've been reading up a little but soooo much info out there its a head fuck. I reckon my plugs have fouled up because apart from this trip to and from Blenheim most driving in the car has been around town with the occasional 'blast'. I remember with both the chevette and the rx3 that much town miles would foul up the plugs. What I should have done was clean up the plugs before I left for Blenheim and then see how they fare. Maybe the buildup on the plugs has created hot spots leading to detonation under high load? I should clean the plugs and see how it goes with some ragging up some hills. I am using decent motorcycle 2 stroke oil for premix at 100:1 as I have always done so I know thats not an issue. I think one big issue for the fine tuning of this engine is the fact it has mild street ports and the carb's needle is chosen for a standard 12A. Hence at low speeds/ idling its a bit rich but at high speed/load its lean. I need to look at the chart Tortron had posted up and maybe play with some other needles. When you fellas out there set up turbo'd engines what sort of AF ratios do you aim for on boost? and at cruising?
  13. Sweet- cheers. I'll try a local friend here as I think he might have something but yeah- why pay almost new prices for shitty second hand. There must be a fair few out there still running this size eh? Maybe not.
  14. Ha ha! Yeah I remember your camper! Cool photo! Just minutes prior to passing you I had been overtaken by some idiot in a new car who juust couldn't bare sitting behind an 'old slow car'.. (because all old cars are slow right..) Even though I had been sitting on the speed limit he still overtook me and then preceded to drive really slowly on the fun twisty bits. So next chance I got I went to overtake him and the idiot sped up! No worries..I just buried the throttle and left him and his Mitsitoydatda corolla or something in my wake. But now he was pizzed off and wanted to sit on my tail which wasn't gonna happen. Just where the above photo was taken I was busy canning it in 3rd to show him my heels. ;D Funny thing was I actually had some preignition up the hill at full boost. I'll copy and paste what I had written up on my oldschool forum thread the other day rather than write the whole lot out again!... Been away to Blenheim to visit the cats. Loaded the Viva up with lots of stuff and Hannahs little sister who's over visiting from the UK. Car went really well. I've been looking forwards to the trip especially driving up over the Whangamoas but sadly I soon caught up to a queue behind a big truck and he wouldn't pull over. The car is definitely running better and cheaper since having adjusted the timing plus I think the excessive toe in would have scrubbed off some speed? Gave the engine bay a clean. One little vent I have not put a hose on had put a fine mist of oil over some parts. New engine mounts holding up good. Oil usage is very low and rather than burning anything I think its a tiny weep from around the oil level sensor on the sump. Took some photos the other night as I want to try to get it featured in the local paper regular car thing they do. I got Hannah to pose but I think I'm more of a natural at the old car show look... Got back to Nelson tonight after another good run except when under full boost passing this camper up a hill in 3rd I had what I think was detonation? It was fast loud banging/flapping sound? Like someone was smacking the firewall really quickly with a rolled up news paper is about how I would describe the sound. It was at about 5500/6000 rpm. Didn't look at the wideband when it happened as I was watching the road etc. Car pulled fine but had me worried, picturing tips flying out the exhaust.. Its still set a 1/4 turn lean on the carb as far as the old lifting pin goes but when cruising along on the flat the wideband reads bang on 14.5- 15. Maybe I should err on the richer side... but the plugs.. read next bit.. Refilled and car had returned 27mpg! I'm happy with that. Pretty sweet for a loose as, whacked together 12a with turbo and carb. Checked plugs and they are dark brown/black. Not oily but definitely running rich. I have fitted new standard 12a rated NGK iridium plugs. I wonder if I should go hotter? What's the usual thing done when adding a turbo to a NA engine with regards to plug ratings?

  16. How far out from the +/- 5% can you go before most cops care? I guess depends on how busy or anal they are? Looking good anyhow- in that last photo, the sign 'fence stain' with your fence stained boot lid...
  17. i think its a sunbeam then. I actually prefer the standard single lights and the standard body shape. That little hatch makes a small car just that much more usable!
  18. I remember meeting a fella at the west coast Ford weekend, westport, 2006 who turned up in a not yet road legal mk1 coupe with an essex v6. Same year I met a young fella top of columbo street who was building a mk1 coupe with same engine. He was a big time fan of classic ford magazine and would have styled his in a similar way to yours. I wonder if this is one of those cars? I built a cage similar to that in my late 90's 2.3 chevette project and I had done equally shit welding! Embarassing looking back. I was refused a cert until I removed it as my cert man was not happy with the welding stating that there was no way it would have got a manz ticket. Shit it was a prick to remove as I had well and truely welded it in. Many many grinding discs later.....
  19. Your a very naughty boy. Stop it now. The Triumph needs to stay and on top of that it needs the steels fitting! Stop tempting him...
  20. Oh- well anyway I just sent them a price request saying I had a mate who got toyos for 110 each. Interesting to see what reply I get....
  21. $110 for Toyos. I ring em!. How long ago was that Andrew?
  22. Cool- imps in nelson! there is a lovely Stilletto? (twin headlights) in Blenheim too.
