  1. I have had heaps of air leak problems in the past both on my Avenger and Charger. Charger air leak was caused by a blown diaphragm in the brake booster and on the Avenger it was a leak in one of the carbs. Both caused the same symptoms as you are having.
  2. You will be missed Fred. It won't be the same without your skids or firing up an engine on the back of a ute.
  3. Yes that was us. We were doing a Sunbeam car club scatter rally. We came 2nd. Yes but shh. I will get it all certed once I have finished all my mods like the suspension and volvo brakes. Otherwise I would need to get it certed like 3 times.
  4. The speedo history of my Avenger isn't the greatest so I am sure it won't matter about a few thousand KM's missed. I will be doing my new dashboard and working speedo in after the OS nats. And I will keep a log of what driving I do and work out a rough distance with google and keep them in a log book as I can add it back on when I do the new dashboard and for servicing etc. I don't know what the old owner was doing with the odometer but it was going crazy in 2004-2006. 16,626 2006, August 29th WOF inspection 8.81/3,206 14,741 2006, January 27th WOF inspection odometer decrease -131,589.00 146,330 2005, September 12th WOF inspection 180.43/65,678 109,875 2005, February 22nd WOF inspection odometer decrease -76,936.00 186,811 2004, July 30th WOF inspection 27.00/9,828 186,757 2004, July 28th WOF inspection 877.57/319,437 19,104 2004, January 19th WOF inspection 262.06/95,390 6,263 2003, December 1st WOF inspection 0.25/91
  5. For now GPS speedo until I get my new alpine dashboard in then I will make up a cable to suit. The Avenger one is a bit to short to reach and the Super and Alpine dashboards have a different connector on the back of the dashboard so it is no point making a cable now when I plan to change it shortly anyway. I have been using the GPS speedo for a while now and I really like it. My old speedo used to wobble like anything so it was easier just to use a GPS speedo.
  6. Went down to pick up my Avenger today with the new 5 speed gearbox. Bygone Autos has done a really great job on the conversion, even finishing a day ahead of schedule so I can have it ready for my trip down to Palmerston North on Thursday. I haven't driven it on the motorway yet because there was big tornados on the north shore so traffic was crazy with all the trees knocked over etc but at 50KM in 5th gear it seats at about 1,500RPM. After my trip away I will do an update to let you know how it goes on the motorway. Shifter fits perfectly and I kept the original 4 speed gearknob so it still looks stock. Reverse is in the same place as it was on the 4 speed so it is just an extra overdrive gear on the upper right. That is good so I don't get mixed up with the position of the gears, they all feel pretty much in the same location as the old 4 speed. Ratios all feel good, 1st is lower but not stupidly low. There is a bit of a jump between 1st and 2nd then 2nd, 3rd and 4th are pretty much the same as the old 4 speed. Here is some pictures of it all installed.
  7. Hi guys, sorry for the lack of updates. here is a catch up of all the stuff I have been doing on the Avenger. I started off by doing my Sierra 5 speed gearbox conversion and installing an MSD 6AL. Here are some pictures of my latest purchases. MSD 6AL and MSD Blaster 2 coil. Sierra 5 speed gearbox with homemade quickshift. Got my MSD and coil fitted. Still running on points at the moment because my electronic dizzy was no good. After much playing around trying to get the electronic dizzy going I have decided to give up on it and have gone back to running points which triggers the MSD 6AL and MSD Blaster 2 coil as pictures above. We did a lot of playing around on the electronic dizzy with the springs and weights and finally got it to looking right with a static timing of 8 degrees and a total of 32 degrees but there was a noticable drop in power so we gave up on it and went back to points. I finally got the jets and chokes I have been waiting for so I could do my final tune. The engine is running so much better now. Tons more low end power with the smaller chokes installed. Pulls well from down low now. Before it would bog down at low RPM due to the chokes being too large and not enough airflow. Now they are perfect. Here are the dyno figures after the final tune. You will see 2 lines. The top line is with the points dizzy and the bottom line is with the electronic dizzy. It got 78.1HP at the wheels which is would be a touch over 100HP at the flywheel. This is awesome because 100HP at the flywheel was my goal when I started this engine build and I am bloody stoked we got there. My goal was to produce as much power as an Avenger Tiger. The Avenger Tiger was 107HP gross at the flywheel but only 92.5HP net at the flywheel. And with my car being about 100BHP at the flywheel I am beating the Tiger by about 7HP at the flywheel!!! Gross horsepower was measured at the crank with none of the accessories like alternator, water pump and air cleaners etc hooked up so they look much higher then the real horsepower. Net is still measured at the crank but with all the factory equipment installed. Then finally you have the rear wheel horsepower which is lower again because of transmission and tyre losses. They used to advertise the gross horsepower on cars to make them look more powerful but in real world numbers the Avenger Tiger would be about 71HP at the wheels. The bottom line in my HP graph was 70.1HP so that would be about what an Avenger Tiger would be compared to my final results which are the top line. More progress on my 5 speed gearbox conversion. I dropped my Avenger off on monday for the start of it's 5 speed conversion. Here are some pictures of the bellhousing and gearbox all cleaned up. Went down the Bygone Autos to check on the progress this yesterday. I must say they are doing an awesome job and I am really impressed with the work so far. The adapter plate looks amazing, it is a pity it will be hidden under the car because it is a pretty cool bit of engineering and shiny also. I have got the Avenger back for the weekend with the 4 speed gearbox and it will be going back down on monday to finish off the rest of the 5 speed conversion. So far the bellhousing has been fitted and the gearbox mount made. They have had the 5 speed in the car to check the shifter placement. All that is left is sorting out the clutch pivot point, finish off the shifter and a few other bits and pieces. Here are some photos of the work to date. Adapter plate. Bygone Autos has done a great job fabricating this, it locates centrally against the gearbox and bellhousing so we won't have any problems with alignment. Relocated shifter waiting to be welded Bellhousing with the window cut for the clutch New gearbox mount
  8. I will be leaving Auckland Thursday morning with another Avenger club member. We are stopping off at Horopito Motors to look for Avenger parts. Rumour has it that they have a couple down there. If anyone else wants to join in on our convoy that would be great.
  9. I use stick on weights on the inside of the rim on my Charger and they look mint.
  10. Avenger engines do rev high, my race car could pull 9K. Didn't use a rev limiter but it would valve bounce at about 9100-9200RPM. Avenger gearboxes are weak as and they don't really like those revs. The engine and gearboxes weren't lasting me that long when I was revving up to 9K so after a while of stuff breaking I decided to shift around 8000-8500K to save wear. Didn't make much if any difference to my times by short shifting that little bit but it meant I got longer out of the gearboxes. My '75 road car does 7K. I use an MSD 6AL with the rev limit set to 7K and I usually shift right before it hits the rev limiter. When are you getting your dyno done? Mine has had it's first dyno done and I have had it rejetted and tweaked so it will be going for it's final fine tune and dyno on monday. be keen to see what your engine does.
  11. It's not really worth having bling on your race car. I never did on my Avenger race car. With my '75 I am building it to look all flashy so it is a different story, with a race car you just want it to go fast.
  12. Top one for sure. They look almost identical to the ones in my Avenger except without the bling HPC coating
  13. I used to have the same master cylinder in my VH charger. I have since changed to a later model VJ booster. I still have the old one down in the garage. I used both rear ports.
  14. Looking good. Can't wait to see it in person tomorrow.
  15. 4! That's what you get when you put 2 and 2 together
  16. I will be going from Auckland to Hastings return so if anyone needs anything from Wellington to Auckland or vice versa then you could give the parts to Hunted and we can swap the parts over in Hastings. Note: I will only have my Avenger and I will have some V8 exhaust manifolds in the boot on the way down and a gearbox in the boot on the way back.
  17. Awesome photo from the Avenger, Love the retro look of it.
  18. Awesome stuff, Can't wait to see it when it is finished.
  19. Carpark underneath is good for me, I was a bit worried about the Charger bottoming out on the ramp so underneath is better.
  20. Haha. It's an Avenger, I could leave the keys in it and a sign saying "Please take me" and it would probably still be there when I got back.
  21. I think it is pretty fair blacking out the make and model with the amount of work he has put in to it. I think it deserves be called a Torana wagon. It's an awesome car and it haul ass. BTW I saw your wagon there Tim. Drove right past me on Sunday.
  22. I know the guy who owns the Torana wagon. We go to a lot of car shows together. It is actually a Vauxhall Viva that he has converted. I didn't take any pictures of it at kumeu but here is a picture of it from another carshow. here are my kumeu photos. They are all of MoPars. http://s871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/Kumeu%202011/?start=all
  23. How is that for coincidence, you have just moved there. Time for an upgrade?
