Mike323
Hi all I am having some trouble I have a Mazda 323 hatch rwd and I have recently had it painted and I put it back together went to take it for a wof and we noticed that when the brake lights and the indicators are in use together the brake lights blink both sides then you can push the brake pedal they work fine both indicators work fine. but it is only when they are working together it happens. I have checked my earths and re mounted them even ran a out of car wire to the battery still no luck so I then changed my fuses all the bulbs I also changed the brake switch and the flasher relay still no luck. I then went and Brought new clips and pins and tested every wire individually and marked down what it was for still no luck I have then moved to the combo switch and found some really dodgy wiring so I chopped and re done all that and yet still no luck has really got me it’s been about 1 and half months of trying to sort this issue. And the hard thing is I don’t know if it has always done it previous wofs or not.. I had changed my front end to the bug eye front but I don’t see that that would have a problem to cause it. And it’s both brake lights that flash wether your indicating left or right any help or ideas which could cause this? I have noticed that my battery is abit old could this cause an issue?? Or how can I test my rea lights out of car to see if it is that? Thanks
440bbm
there is either a power back feeding somewhere, but i wouldve said it was bad earth as this usually the case with blinking lights untill push the brake pedal. have you got a test light? you should be able to check each power wire to each bulb and see if its wiring or the light housings creating the fault. it could even be a wire shorting enough onto the body somewhere but the fuses could be high enough to not blow. is your hatch one of the models that used to have side indicators and now been shaved/trimmed and its back feeding the rest of the circuit? Mof
Does the rear light cluster share an earth inside the housing of the light?
Mike323
Nah it doesn’t have indicators on the side I thought mite have been that also I do notice that the horn has been hooked up to a switch which is leaving a wire just floating about and that has power to it when I checked it. And yup the light cluster has a earth steel strap going to each light then goes to a wire to earth to body they both have individual earths for each light I’ll try add a video with hazards on
AllTorque
My bet would be a bad earth between a bulb cap and the bulb holder. When you ran the test earth cable from the battery are you connecting it to the bulb?
Mike323
I’m just running it off the earth wire that comes out of each light cluster here is a picture of a rear light cluster
AllTorque
Try touching it on the bulb holder if that doesn’t help, touch a little screwdriver between the bulb cap and the holder.
Mike323
Okay I haven’t thought of trying that I will give that a go and see how I get on I did wonder if it was the earth in the lights but I will try that and let you guys know thanks

Mike323
So I just tried the screw driver on the side of bulb to earth didn’t do much I then put my multimeter on oms and the earth was getting this reading on the metal strip in the light cluster it was jumping between 2 different readings?? I then noticed the wiring was shot and hanging by a couple threads to the alternator so I chopped and re clipped that went to try start the car and try it but battery was to flat so it’s on charge but should my earth have readings like this?? Mike323
Well after all that of buying new bits and a lot of mucking around with wires I think I have sorted the issue. I read something about the alternator and battery so I checked my alternator wiring and discovered that both wires that plug in was only hanging on by no more than 5 Strans each so I replaced and tidied that up fully charged battery and gave it another go took the car for a spin then checked to see if the issue was resolved and yes it definitely made a difference you have to look very closely to see a slight pulse in the brake lights but I think the more I drive it and give the battery a good charge it will go away
