hellnback
THUNDER SUNDAY CANCELLATION It is with regret that Thunder Sunday has been cancelled due to issues around alcohol and licensing the event. The Council, by all accounts has made it too difficult to get this sorted and the cost has proven prohibitive. We have been advised that it is unlikely that the Council will allow racing to occur again next year or in the future. This is a regrettable decision as far as the club is concerned as Thunder Sunday has been an important date in our race calendar and enjoyable for all those who've participated in the meets. https://www.facebook.com/Southern-Dragways-249314205143849
kyteler
I imagine that's the council trying to remove the bogan aspect from the blossom festival and make it more family friendly and less issues with the mongrel side of the car enthusiast crowd that attends. A shame as the blossom fest. drags were usually quite good when the finally started later in the day.

kyteler
https://www.odt.co.nz/regions/central-otago/no-liquor-no-drag-racing Significantly different in tone to SD's take on it. Basically SD struggle with simply getting their lights working correctly, unsurprising that they'd struggle to administrate the necessity required for appropriate licencing approval. This is not a scene specific change, I had briefly encountered this during my previous role and organising attendance of shows (rural for Fert. related nonsense) and how you handle foods and drinks. Toddy415
We would like to thank everyone for their interest and feedback about the cancellation of Thunder Sunday. Given the huge amount of feedback and questions we have decided to reply with one post rather than respond individually. We have partnered with Terrace Kindergarten for a number of years to create the Thunder Sunday drag racing event at the Alex Airport. Both Southern Dragways Inc. and Terrace Kindy are not for profit organisations who run with a volunteer base. To run an event like Thunder Sunday, the time, manpower and cost is significant and we rely heavily on our volunteer base to ensure this is well run and meets the needs of racers and spectators. This year the organisers of this event were advised by the Council that the event must be licensed. Terrace Kindy and Southern Dragways had many discussions to plan how to proceed with this given that this is not the business of either organisation nor something our clubs would normally be involved in. We appreciate that the Council is saying that they have not said this event cannot occur, which is true, and that they are willing to work with us to allow this to happen. We would have appreciated this attitude during the process but instead have had difficulty being able to make contact with the council to discuss what has been required and how best to go about this. At the time of deciding to cancel, three weeks from the event, both organisations needed to make a decision to cut already existing losses and cancel the event. The Council has also advised that the cost of licensing is minimal but for the organisers, this cost has increased exponentially with the resourcing of the liquor plan. This entails the original licensing cost, the cost of fencing of the booth which we understand is significant and security both inside and outside the licensed booth. We understand security would need to be paid staff and if this is not correct, and could be volunteers, we would never be able to man this from our small volunteer pool. We canvassed our members during this journey to see if a dry event would be acceptable which they agreed would work if this was a necessary step. What has been advised to the organisers is that the Police would not allow the event to be dry, which we can only assume is about their inability to Police this. All in all, this has been a disappointing journey for the organisers as this event has been a profitable and enjoyable venture for all involved for a number of years. The fact that no further racing at Alex will be permitted by the Council going forward is a sad one for Southern Dragways. We would have loved to have one last event to celebrate the passing of Thunder Sunday.
Toddy415
If there is enough support they are hoping to run this on the 20th of November. Will see what happens.
