Escort Alternator Swap

How difficult is this to do?

Mine has blown so I've gone and ordered a new one, I've been suggested 12v at 45amp or higher.

I've gone with a Lucas 17ACR alternator from classicarmirrors.com.

Price I paid was $160 the old guy reckons it should be the same unit and an easy swap over.

Any suggestions that I should look out for as this is my first alternator swap?

Would you guys know if this unit fits the brackets of a standard unit on a 1300 GL?

Thanks lads.

unless you have a generator at the moment, I would have thought that alternator would be the same as what you currently have fitted, the 17acr is a really common alternator for british cars of the time.

If you have an alternator fitted now then it 'should' bolt up. Once you get the thing and if it doesnt fit, come back here and we can tell you whats needed to change some wiring etc

Yea I do have an alt fitted now. Fingers crossed. I got a mate who's a mechanic coming to fit it for me or at least give me a hand as I learn.

Rally hoping for a simple swap out as I need the bugger up and running as it's my daily!

Fingers crossed!

What I was getting was the electrical light on despite a manually charged battery. It drains and the car won't recharge it, it appears.

Even with a fully charged battery the electrical fault light stayed on. Battery lasted about 3 days.

It's more than likely the alternator brushes. You can get new ones from Repco etc for around $20 the last time I did them... pretty sure you don't need to solder anything in the escort ones too. They just slot in, very easy swap and saves getting a new alternator.

Managed to get this done. Wow what an easy swap over. Who didn't tell me it was only 3 bolts and a plug in the back of it.

Hahahah!

I didn't realize it was just a big plug, I thought it was all soldered wiring.
