MTM
Not getting any reading on my fuel gauge and as it's my daily I'm really struggling with putting a long piece of grass into the tank to see how much fuel is left. Someone said it'll be my sender line. Difficult to replace or should I be looking and replacing the entire tank? It'll sometimes kick back in when I hit a heavy bump, but it's been dead for weeks and weeks now. Cheers boys!
peteretep
When the gas tank is empty, take out the level sensor and check the resistance to see if it's changing as you move it up and down. If it's changing its 'probably' ok. Now check resistance of wire going to gauge, it is quite long and goes through a few plugs so check them too. It should be in one of those but it could also be a problem in the dash some how
governorsam
Earth the wire on the sender unit on the tank. With the key on, gauge should read full. Disconnect and should read empty.
pusherman
Mine reads a quater full when its full and quickly falls of into um not sureville. MTM
Just to explain cause I'm kinda confused haha. My gauge is already above full. It doesn't read the tank at all. Would this be a sender issue? Should I just buy a replacement tank and sender line for the car I can get one for about 40 bucks second hand out of an old escort. Also, reckon it'l be hard to install? peteretep
I'll check which way it goes tonight but I think if its earthing it will show max full, it may be earthing in the sender to the tank or at one of the plugs. But its pretty easy to remove and refit a tank. Its much easier to take the sender unit out of the tank with it still in place and check it though, just make sure the tank is empty so it doesnt come flooding out
MTM
Awesome man. I'll give it a go this weekend!
Benno
Just to explain cause I'm kinda confused haha. My gauge is already above full. It doesn't read the tank at all. Tried pulling the wire at the tank end? Should drop down to below empty when completely disconnected. If so, it's the sender - new one would be easy to fit with the tank emptied. If that doesn't make a difference there is a fault in the sender wire or the gauge. Edit: I'm assuming that the fuel gauge works the same as the temp one at least, have never had any issues so no experience with fuel gauge issues
MTM
Yea what gets me is that it used to sometimes bounce back on me. So I feel like it's the sender. I'll have a good play with it.
peteretep
I checked mine and yeah it drops to empty when disconnected from the sender and goes max full when going straight to earth. So you want to check all the plugs and the sender to see if one of those is broken/not fitted properly
