peteretep
hi guys, since I had my starter reco'd in my escort it has made a terrible banging and crashing noise to the point that now it wont start and even binds on the ring gear. Is this a symptom of the bushes being worn? or what else? Wasted bushes could be the easy answer because it was an auto electrical place that reco'd the unit so it is unlikely that they are engineers who understand bushes etc? I got sentra to machine out the mounting on the starter so I could move it away from the ring gear but it hasnt seemed to make a difference what to do? KKtrips
Is the starter motor the same as what came out?
peteretep
No, this is a one engaged and the other was inertia, it's hard to swap them out because the inertia requires extra wiring and solenoids If someone had a pre engaged I could borrow that would be sweet
ESKIN8R
Did you swap the ring gear to match? Each starter has a different type...
ESKIN8R
I also have a recoed inertia and pre engaged starter I would sell if you want
KKtrips
Did you swap the ring gear to match? Each starter has a different type... this ^^ is why I was asking.. They have the leading edge to engage the starter pinion on different sides.. Also I have a feeling that the tooth pitch is also different. peteretep
yeah I made sure when I did it to get the right ring gear put on, although knowing me, there is a reasonable likelyhood that the wrong one was chosen! would banging and clunking be a symptom of the wrong ring gear? whats a reco'd pre engaged starter go for? ESKIN8R
Sell you one for $100 if you want it... was sold as being new to a guy I got a bunch of parts off from a auto electrician, but looking at it appears to be recoed rather than totally new
peteretep
I'll check to make sure I have the right ringgear again and I'll pm you which one I will need haha
peteretep
Ok ive had a look at this once I got the locking washer thingy off one end of the starter, I have the right ring gear and the right starter from what I can see, I have taken the starter apart and it is showing signs of scoring from tiny bits of metal and also some scoring in rings at both ends which may mean that it is rocking around as it turns over ie bearings are toast. There are quite alot of metal shavings which means that something must be interfering quite alot? What do you think? Should I get rid of the metal shavings and try again? Borgweiser
yep, that be some sloppy starter bushes if ever I seen them, file all high spots off armature and put in new bushes- do a skid
peteretep
Cheers, where can you get new starter motor bushes from?
Borgweiser
Go see your friendly auto electrician who rebuilds starters, or a sympathetic engineer can turn you some in bronze- or brass depending on what it was originally. Take all of the casing down so they can line bore it straight if neccesary.
peteretep
I got the reco'd starter off ESKIN8R and it appears to have solved my problems and the car starts perfectly. I guess time will tell if there is something else damaging the starter motor as it more used
