steve
A quick question for all the electricians on here - can you install and run a 15v stereo in a car and operate it with 12v? I want to strip one of these - and us the ipod dock and controls in my car. Would it work? Cheers, Steve
shavenYak
I'm gonna get in before the experts and put my money on yes. Car voltage while running is more around 14v so should be near enough. Maybe try it first with a battery before you strip it?
Yowzer
TBH a regulated DC-DC converter will be a better way to go. Things like that won't have the same noise filtering a car unit has, so alternator whine / damage from voltage spikes is likely. Also, are you sure it's DC? I know a lot of units like that run AC input.
kpr
alot of ac stuff will have a rectifier in it to convert to dc. so in theory will run on dc if correct voltage thrown at it
cubastreet
If it's 15V AC then 12-14V DC probably won't be adequate, 15V AC makes about 21V DC. I used to run a ghetto blaster in a car and it worked fine, but that was designed to run off 8 D cells. I didn't have problems with interference, not to say you won't. Probably best to try it before you strip it out.
