BeastyBlue
hey, i have a Mk2 escort 1300, i'd like to put something more powerfull in it. i'm still in the idea stages at the moment and i have looked into getting a 2l pinto, but the exhaust manifold is on the left side and my exhaust runs up the right hand side, is this an easy fix? and what do i do about the fuel lines? Its already got the looks! just needs more power
Gaz
Exhaust & fuel need to cross over, preferably not in the same place. Some of the 2l carbs need a return line run and others dont. There is a tech article about this btw. Another option would be to buy the crossmember/mount/sump setup for a ca18det into an escort which is on TM at the mo. BeastyBlue
also, if i were to get a 5spd sierra gearbox, the driveshaft would have to be shortened for it to fit? how much would it cost to get shortened and fitted (gearbox and driveshaft) by a professional? Borgweiser
Work a 1600/ save heaps of hassle, make same power. Been there done the pinto thing, sad that a perfectly good Cortina/Sierra and a perfectly good escort die to make a car that handles horrid without mods for the extra weight, and makes not much more power for the effort involved. I'd go with gaz's suggestion and go Ca18 and equivalent brake upgrade, sounds a good one
glen
^ id build a 1600 crossflow. so many parts available to hot them up. and you don't need to worry about everything fitting etc. build a draw through turbo'd 1600 kent. done

Gaz
I dunno Pinto is so easy into an Escort and nowdays is easier to find than a decent 1600. Keeping in mind he does not have a 1600 Id still say Pinto or something Nissan or Toyota if he is up for the conversion. 5speed Sierra box will bolt up to engine and with slighty tunnel smashing and a new gearbox hole cut will bolt up. Certain auto driveshaft will fit without shortening otherwise its off to the enginner for a cut and balance. This can range anywhere from $150-$350. BeastyBlue
What about a 2l mondeo zetec conversion? how hard would it be to do this?
anglia4
zetec conversion is pretty involved. If you go efi you need a computer + throttle bodies + custom manifold + high pressure fuel system etc etc If you go carbs you need a megajolt computer + carb + custom manifold etc You need to make a water rail as one of the water outlets is on the back of the head so you need to make a thermostat housing and tube to bring it to the front You need to make your own exhaust manifold + engine mounts etc Also need to modify the sump (some claim it can't be welded) or find a 1.8cvh sierra sump to modify I'm still not entirely sure what flywheel clutch combo is easiest to come by in nz for this either. The one thing that is easy is that a 5spd sierra box bolts straight up OR you can get on http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/catalog and buy everything you need for the conversion but its $$ If you wanted to stay ford in a ford the best way to go is a Duratec engine but again its seriously involved and $$ as you also need a custom bellhousing I'm doing a zetec in my anglia but haven't got very far with it yet
