LingLing
Ok, I recently bought a bmw 316 e21. I drove from CHCH to AKL. All sweet apart from not much brakes and handles like a boat. Anyways. The temperture gauge goes to upto 3/4 in town and bit more than half on high way. it never overheated tho. Even at steep hills etc. water is full, there is NO Coolant in it. so what is the problem? OK, I replaced the thermostat, Kind of flashed the system with pouring the water in(don't have garden hose). Filled with new coolant. The temperature guage still shows slightly more than half, 55%-60%. hmmm,, more suggestions?
felixx
I had that issue in my mondeo. The relay for the thermostatically activated fan was shot. 2 ways to fix it 1) Replace relay 2) When temp gets up turn on Air con as this turns the fan on. I did option 2 as I hated the mondeo. LingLing
There is no air con..... and I noticed the fan was constantly on any way drive by the engine. Do you think my head gaskit is blown? well I drove over 1000kms from chch to akl without issue.
KKtrips
Could be tons of things - first thing I would try is replacing the thermostat and chuck in a good dose of antifreeze - maybe a new radiator cap while you're at it..
LingLing
I agree, coolant is a must do list. what about blockage in the circulation
KKtrips
Replace the thermostat - is the most likely culprit for blockages in the circulation (the radiator is prone for blockages too)
LingLing
ok, will do, mate's business got a e30 to wreck, see if the thermostat will fit mine.
KKtrips
Please buy a new thermostat - fitting a second hand would be a waste of time.. On par with fitting second hand brake pads in my opinion.
LingLing
ok. didn't know that, will buy new ones if i can find them
KKtrips
Try your local BnT - they will do them - if not they will tell you where to go.. Buy genuine BMW if you have to. I guess they will be about $40ish for genuine or $20ish if BnT do them..
LingLing
mint! cheap as. the car rides like a boat, Needs new suspension. Do you know if the e30 suspension will fit?

LingLing
OK, I replaced the thermostat, Kind of flashed the system with pouring the water in(don't have garden hose). Filled with new coolant. IT has IMproved a LOT, but The temperature guage still shows slightly more than half, 55%-60%. hmmm,, more suggestions?
Hemi
sounds good to me man, put it under some load like up a nice steep long hill and see if that changes

LingLing
haha, harbour bridge isn't good enough then? anyways, do you know why it is still slightly over heat? not enough flushing? by the way, i tried some of you guys flushing solutions, I put washing powder into the cooling system, filled with water, drive!! Overheats! and nearly killed the car!!
KKtrips
Nah Harbour bridge is not a loaded hill at all.. HAHA Washing powder????? Who suggested that??
xsspeed
I think it was suggested that soda crystals could be used to try flush - not that I would without doing other things 1st. If its sitting at 50% or so on the temp guage then whats the problem - that sounds like its in the normal operating range.
