loose steering rack on MK2

Recommended Posts

took the 77 mk2 esky to a wof place and one of the issues he quoted was a loose streering rack.

the bushing right at the bottom has been replaced less than a year ago.

any ideas what he could be talking about, im not sure if he was just unusually picky, but im trying to sell the car and this looks like the most expensive issue.

thanks, sorry if i cant be more specific.

Go back and ask him to point out what part he means - he has to be able to locate and point out the play to you..

It will likely be 5 things if something has worn out (presuming that it isn't just a loose bolt)

the D-bush that bridges from the rack to the crossmember - possible

the adustment between the internal rack and pinion mechanism - unlikely

the bush in the end of the rack - possible

the inner rack end - likely

the tie rod end - possible

It could be other things in the steering column but that isn't really the rack..

Tighten wheel bearings yourself then get someone to wiggle wheel up and down, and side to side while you feel the rack boots etc for play. There is an adjustment in one side which you can adjust by pulling the rack out.
