Testament Posted March 1, 2011 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Do a key off plug read maybe? goto some back road, get it to do the aforementioned cut out at 5000rpm problem and turn the key off while its doing it and coast to a stop. remove plugs and take photos. post up here. dominic Posted March 1, 2011 Share Posted March 1, 2011 Sorry to bust in here with my first post, but i have a mk2 escort with exactly the same problems. will rev to 5k fine, and 5.5k with much determination but doesnt make any power up there. After replacing the carb, having the distributor curve adjusted and replacing all the vac hoses im now guessing that my cam is too far advanced. possibly the same with yours? It is my understanding that a engine with an advanced cam will move the powerband down in the rev range, but will required alot of advance to run. I notice with mine that it makes better power at partial throttle where the vac advance is actually doing something. just a thought however, perhaps your cam was actually dialed in, mine wasnt Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

peteretep Posted March 12, 2011 Author Share Posted March 12, 2011 Well it appears that I solved the problem and of course it's Mildy embarrassing. Engine had a poor earth back to the chassis which allowed it to run but the resistance must have gotten high due to heat or some such thing and gotten worse with higher current. Once done I intend to drive down to invercargill for a good road trip so I'll come see you and a mate of mine that lives down that way.
