converting to alternator

Recommended Posts

after leaving my lights on last night and draining my battery, i think i have proceded to destroy the generator on the cortina (loud whine and smoke.....) so am wondering whats involved in converting to alternator?

anyone done this/knows whats involved?

ive had a wee google but they all seem to be for converting from positive earth to negative then to alternator, and i cant really tell whats needed just for the alternator...(mines already negative earth)

any help would be chooooice

on an alternator, theres just a dash light switch, which is the earth for the circuit, and a voltage sense wire which figures out how much energy the alternator needsd to output, its pretty, easy, although changing it with a standard ford setup might be a bit confusing, but its really not

yeh electronics confuse the shit out off me, but yeh, its cant be tooo hard, i mean the generator only has two wires coming out of it....

im going to try switching out the voltage regulator first, as i think thats the culprit (it shorted out on the car when i unpluged the generator :doubt::x ).

i done this on my wagon a few weeks ago had to change to negitive earth and from 6volt to 12volt it was real easy most modern alternators have voltage regulators built into them the lucas one is easy as it fits fords they come in escorts etc hardest part is making it so it mounts up so the belt lines up and you able to tighten the belt.

once you got that remove your voltage regulator and hook the wires up to bypass it then there is the 2 wires to your gen you just need to find the which wire is which and hook to the right pins from the generator and test it to make sure its working it would be best to check with your local sparky what wire is what as alot of cars are different but thats all i had to do to mine.

if wiring from scratch also a good idea to use a power diode on the positive of the field coil to prevent back emf destroying other devices, ie if you have electronic spark or fuel injection computer, head unit, et cetera
