xsspeed
Got heaps of landie and holden parts, trying to figure out which goes with which. Any idea what this gearbox is off, I had assumed it was the 1978 Holden Premier but maybe not? This is the V8 thats sitting there, anyone know if its a GM/Holden or Rover one by looking at that? kyteler
Chev/Holden has distributor at the back of the engine. Rover and Ford have it at the front. If that helps?
xsspeed
Whats that thing here that sticks up, is that the coolant filler? looks like the water hose attaches to it? i.e. not a dissy so I guess its a GM motor?
kyteler
Looks like an oil filler to me, the whole setup is a little weird though. Doesn't ring any bells. Should have some casting on the side to let you know what size it is, if it's GM. I think... Fuck. Can't remember really.
xsspeed
Well I checked out some rover and holden v8's and it doesnt look like any of them so now I am stumped. Will have to wait till I check it out again and look for any casts of markings.
kyteler
Yeah, it's a weird sucker. I checked Leyland etc too, to no avail.
thegreatestben
is it diesel or petrol. Either way you could pull out the plugs and see if there's numbers on them Somewhere like perhaps repco could identify the plug and search what motors/vehicle they are suited to
xsspeed
Diesel didn't even enter my mind tbh Good idea on the plugs, will check it out Might have to put it on trademe and say its a hemi

Chur it is a bit hard to say fopr certain that this motor is a V anything from the photo. You certain it isn't a slant inline? It is 100000% not Rover V8
Jay GTi
Can only find this crap pic, but it could well be a Chevy 6.5 diesel V8?

xsspeed
No haven't seen in person for this, just the photo, its all down in palmy, totally assumed v8 because of the slant, but zooming in you may well be right, not definate that there is a left hand vee, zooming right in it looks like another rocker cover but maybe not
thegreatestben
Yeah i'd put money on it being a slant, there's hoses where another bank would be.
xsspeed
Could well be, if I had been there when this container was opened I would have been all over it, but yeah, almost want to go back down and check it out just to be sure now. Jay GTi
Pretty sure it's a V, looks like the 2nd bank is hiding behind the alternator to me. So what do I win when it turns out to be a Chevy diesel V8?
Insani-T
Im pretty sure that its not a Holden V8, there werent that many different ones and I own the oldest version and it looks nothing like that. Edit: But then again it being a Diesel I know nothing.
kyteler
I'm thinking early Chev/GM (not rotten Aussie) with the way that filler neck is. I looked up diesels earlier too, as that picture of Jay's show's.. it's pretty fucken close to that. And if it is an old Chevy Diesel V8, then fucken BANG! mean. Would love to make a Vege V8 powered something or other.
xsspeed
Yeah asked the missus last night, said she only counted the right hand bank, was too much crap on top of it for her to move. The more I look at the pic though the more I can make out laft hand bank in there. Shit if it is a diesel V8 how much is that sucker going to weigh? reckon it would still be sweet in a SWB landie? The weight distribution might be a bit off
Jay GTi
I've been doing some random reading about the Chev diesels as part of trying to find a better pic and while there's a fair amount of bullshit around, it would seem that it's actually on par (or slightly lighter according to some) with the Landie 300TDi engine. So it shouldn't be the boat anchor you'd otherwise assume... and these are common-ish conversions for Landies and Landcruisers, there seems to be a good bit of love for them on t'internet... so if you're rocking one of them and a shortened Rangie chassis... could be one cool Landie you'll have there.
