shizzl
just thought id try to tap in to my redneck roots and race a stockcar for a season or 2.. this one is powered by a EL falcon straight 6. tagged in behind is a falcon box. mazda diff and apparently mazda hubs.. will have the same ford Y body but of a uglier condition but that doesnt matter due to it needing a paint anyway just incase those mega million dollar sponsors wanna see how beautifully maintained it is

shizzl
so ive been thinking alot about starting to build my own flat chassis...so ive done a shiz load of drawings, mostly to scale (1:20).. i based it on the dimensions of my current chassis, but will end up changing it i guess. but i drafted a plan onto paper to scale and decided to construct one out of some balsa wood i had. the balsa isnt to scale though..the 5mm should be 75x75 in real form, the rollcage is way oversized, but you get the pont of what im thinking of anyway.. havent done anything in the way of a front end or diff,as yet... havent decide if id go IRS or offset or keep it centred. front i cant decide to stick to the 5 linked beam,or independent or with cantilever... heaps of options, and all with their own pros and cons.. i personally prefer the flat chassis to the space frame as they come out better off in teams races and general furk them up racing..sure you feel the hits more, but ill be going for a cushy seat.. the plan is build the new chassis in winter and sell my current one as a roller.. looking for options for a jap gearbox instead of using a zf bedford box/hq box or landcruiser...theyr all getting hard to get and damn expensive.. shizzl
well ive been offline recetly... so a bit of an update... 30th dec i went down to cromwell for the xmas champs.. the stockcars were invited as a demo class. there were 12 cars for the 30th,not bad seeing as there was a car from nelson, one from chch, mine from greymouth and the rest from dunedin and invergiggle.. I opted to start all 3 races off the back as it was only my 2nd meeting, and the 1st meeting was only 3/4 of a race for me..so still newby.. cromwell is a furkn fast track if ya got the balls to stand on the gas.. i finished the first race being lapped by everyone.... 2nd race i stood on it,ony got lapped by 3 cars, then the temps got up, and heading into the pit gate the radiator hose split wide open and dumped the entire contents on me,i smelt like coolant and ass for days.. fixed the hose for the 3rd race, and i didnt even get lapped.. fukn stoked with the progress..went over the line with the lead car about 30m behind me left the car there and returned on the 1st jan for the war of the wings meeting.. this time i went in the marble draw..1st race i was on pole.. greens on,hammer down,1st corner and taking hits like tyson, and the damn clutch pin breaks out again, thats me for that race, did 2 turns, sat that one out. 2nd race was off the back being reverse grid in 2nd race. 6 laps in i started giving it death, going hard then got teams raced into the wall by 2 twins from dunedin,i basically did a victory lap on the wall, slammed back down and they took off,i did another lap and the car felt weird as hell, then going down the back straight i see a spring lying on the track,it looked like mine.... then 2 slam, took to the wall again... managed to drag its arse over the line to finish the race, but it bottomed out on the track so got carted away.. 3rd race was a no show due to damage... the damage list is: missing left rear spring and top hat busted left rear shock bent left front rim 2 flat front tyres right front rim bent, squashed, fukt right front shock bent like a banana it was the most fun ever... i have now fixed the shocks, got more rims and tyres. shizzl
17th jan, was meant to be modified champs in greymouth,so was out in the shed sorting the car getting shocks set up and setting bumper heights.. went to drive it out to load onto the truck and wouldnt get any get except 4th. odd...even with the engine shut down no go.. it was idling for about 5mins when i noticed smoke from somewhere and then a bearing noise,i knew it was from the engine cos it wasnt loud. then i shut it down, popped the shifter off the turret and steam was coming from the box. oil was milky as a white chocolate bar...looks like water had got into my box somehow.. had new oil before 1st race.. pulled the box out, took it to a mates place and we pulled it apart,a shit-load of filings were inside, both layshaft bearings were toast from the milky oil... and the input shaft bearing was marginal.. 7:30pm last night after the box was stripped we went to the local speed/parts shop. he stays open till like 11pm,got new layshaft bearings, ordered a new high load bearing and even used his press to remove 2 of the shited bearings, the other we had to cut off with a precision wharehouse grinder.. socket-pressed on the layshaft bearings, now just waiting for the main shaft bearing to arrive. the situation with the gear sets aint too bad really.. the reverse gear has 1/4 of a tooth missing...but it will still work-hopefully.. the rest are fine. then i also found that the shifter ball seat is missing, that would make gearchanges real shite. but i guess well see how it goes once we get her back together.. thats all for now.. oh,also came up with a new paint scheme, but wanna do some graphics to go over it... get your ideas in
shizzl
righto so got the box back together and in the car. checked for operation whith driveshaft off, then will it on with wheels spinning, seemed to be all good except for 3rd,sometimes it wont engage gear, itll just graunch, but if ya keep putting it in itll stay and work sweet. only thing i can think of is that broken tooth.. unless a detent spring has been lost.. atleast i can say i didnt put it back together.. so if it doesnt go all to plan this weekend i will pull the engine out and sell the chassis as a complete roller minus engine. might keep the box and replace the gear and sell it,cos theyr super expensive. i got myself a 3 speed hq box,so im damn stoked got 4 monroe gas shocks to build new coilovers with. just need to get the sleeves and nuts and top hats made up. get new springs..but ill keep them for the new chassis.. shizzl
had the box out for a while now at work.. have found a few problems with it that ive been trying to iron out the bugs. its actually easier to use bug spray than an iron... got another clutch plate to put in so it should be back together this week.. on the weekend i went to nelson for the stock shock.. while i was there i picked up a set of rims for it..theyr like modgies but 15" and white. also picked up a brand new Y body for the winter make over so shell look real spanky next season.. other things i need to do before the next meet i attend is to get a large thermo fan.. sort out a fuel leak on some hose joins near the tank. get some 15 "inner tubes for the rear tyres and some 14s for the fronts so i can have some spares. shizzl
King of the Coast went off today.. track was wet as,real pluggy.. i finished both heats with a total of 11 points, ended up tied on 17th with 2 other drivers. coin toss put me back on grid 19 for the finish race.. was f---n stoked to qualify. car was going bloody good, but my ability and skill level lacked a bit. for some reason i kept spinning mid corner of 1&2..the rest was fine.. took some hits, gave some back, including a club member into the wall...sorry hads..not i put a slider into 89n brad hosking but i got it in the side from another car... the end result was a broken front arm which meant my front end was sliding left to right. so that was the final done.. thoroughly enjoyed myself and looking forward to next season... war of the wings and cromwell xmas champs!!!!! Pics to come from todays effort..
