The ones on the XJ have a few cracks around them, possibly causing an vacuum leak. Was going to try and coat them with a even coat of clear Permatex Silicon. Reckon it will work or am I going to pay thru the muthafuckn nose for some new ones????

I reckon your idea will be a waste of time.

Check them with brakeclean first - you will be able to spot a vacuum leak that way (with the engine running) as the engine will stumble and die if there is a leak when you are spraying brakeclean.

Do the XJs have points?

Also - check the alternator. If it is missing when the indicators are on it suggestes a voltage drop. CDI ignition is pretty sensitive to voltage

from memory your ones look something liek this?

give up and make a steel flange, weld a short length of tube on and cut some radiator hose to slip between carb and flange/tube/ 2 bandclamps stz

then never worry about those crappy things ever again.
