Unclejake
^ the normal upgrade is to Escort rack and pinion - which also requires the Escort crossmember AFAIK. Are you keeping or selling this wagon of yours?

Gaz
Ive done it on my mk2 Note, dont listen to any of those articals you can find on the net.. NONE of them were right/missed large bits out. Even one in a classic car mag I have was wrong and just plain didnt work. Mainly because they can weld steering parts overseas and get away with it. Anything on your suspension cast, (or in some cert guys cases even steel) you cannot weld. Adjustable TCA = not certable also. Use: -Escort crossmember modified to fit between chassis rails -Sierra sway bar with modified mounting points to chassis -Sierra bottom arms with custom nolothanes/trim your own a bit -Capri struts (use left in right and right in left) -Escort rack & Tie rods -Make some rack extensions up that will increase the length of your rack. (i.e a threaded socket type thing. I turned mine up then quenched it in oil) -The part where the tierod goes into the stut needs boring out with a tappered reamer. (dont tell cert guy this) It has to be a certain slope which I cant member of the top of my head.. I do know that it is semi impossiable to find tho (I can give you more details when I look at mine) -Sierra sprung column with new mounting points made to hang it from. -Triumph UJ between end of steering column and rack. This needs cutting and welding (also dont tell cert guy you have done this if it is cast) -Umm, I also used a bearing where the column goes through the firewall but this isnt really needed. This conversion combinied with roller bearing strut tops makes for really light and really mint handeling. I def recomend the conversion. All of what I wrote above I have done and it has been certed by a pretty tough cert guy. Dont think Ive missed anything off, just ask if you get stuck. It isnt the most straight forward conversion but its worth it. Just make sure ya get your bottom arms parallel or you wont get a cert as you have to get a wheel alignment first. bean.101
Good shit. Ive been meaning to ask Gaz about the rack conversion, and there's all the info. Im seriously thinking of converting the mk1. If it's half as good as Gaz says it will be worth while, cause my mk1 is all over the road. So cheers Gaz for first hand information. Gaz
All good mate. I know someone who has done a rack conversion on a mk1 by bolting a hillman rack onto the standard cortina xmember also. Not sure exactly how he did it tho so really useless info.
Dr Danger
There are other ways of doing it that do not modify the cars original geometry. Something that engineers are not very seen on over here (Oz). One way is pretty simple, the other not. For a discussion try http://www.cortina-mk1classifieds.com/forum/ but you might have to register first, not sure. Unclejake
Dr Danger is a GC. Personally tested by UJ (he stayed with me for a few days last year and i think you met him at Bata Gaz. He was the bearded fanta pants with the shaved head) . He has a bazillion HP Mk1 Cortina in Australia. Sadly the website he pointed us too has little to offer on this particular subject. Yuh. That is all. Peace.
Gaz
Ah yeap think I know the guy. Yeah I could'nt find anything on the steering conversions on the site either hence my response haha. Looks like some good stuff on there tho. Will actually go read some of the engine conversion things right now. Gaz
Dr Danger
The website does bloody well so have things to offer you goons. There are two threads that discuss the rack issue: But now I have looked they are tad obscure, sorry. Type 'rack' into the search and then take a peek at 2 threads, one titled 'Mk1 Zetec', the other titled 'Geoff and Jules V8 Mk1'. That should explain all. Fanta pants indeed...
