thminiman
hey guys, im considering this as a project...nothing is in the making yet and if anything gets underway it will be a longterm project probably, BUT i am interested in a few things... who here has done one of these, at the moment im thinking id prefer the sr20det, but what then why have people used c18det's? is it just a size thing? im sure ill have plenty of questions, im after experienced reccomendations. Sparkle
i think people use ca18 because they are easier to swap into older nissans/datsuns, dont qoute me on that tho, im guessing for your conversion, both would be hard as each other so ur probably better to go for the SR
thminiman
yea, thats what im thinking, if i do it ill make it worth the effort
atropine
isnt davidian doing something with a CA18?.. or maybe a sr.. if hes using the ca then he'll probaly have some reasoning
W8NSEE
nah its meathodz thats doin it aint, hes usin the CA in his escort
RT
As far as I know they are much of a muchness. Both have pro's and con's so it's all up to personal preferance. I think the SR can be more powerful but it's rougher in design harmonics etc.
Gaz
I chose Ca18det for the following reasons - alot cheaper to buy, cheaper to rebuild a bit cheaper to mod to an extent, smaller. You cant get the same power but then how much do you want in a light car. You can still reliably get 300kw at the treads with the Ca. Also it is a rev engine which I thought was more suited to a small car. The Sr would be a good engine if you wanted a tubbed drag car or maybe a circuit car. I dont think drivability would be as good as with the ca but that all depends on turbo size and cams i supose. Just the extra tourque i thought would cause alot of unneeded wheel spin. anyting else..?
atropine
nah its meathodz thats doin it aint, hes usin the CA in his escort lol yeah like half an hour after posting i was thinking.. damnit it was methodz.. what am i on about

Gaz
Is it just me or is that website a bastard to navigate around. Trying to read the old engine specs and it reloads to the new page every so seconds. Even with stop button pressed. That was a few days ago when i read it. That engine in there would be an expensive one. Cant remember if i did or didnt say the turbo size its running? Any info there?

cortina-mk1
what sort of further info do you require? im the person to ask
thminiman
hey cortina_mk1, im just wondering, i presume you weighed up the options between the c18det and the sr20 det, what pushed you towards choosing the c18det, on topve that, what diff and running gear did you use?
cortina-mk1
diff info can be found here just like the CA18 better its compact size valve train arrangement nice sounding engine and weight we have an SR20det fitted to our lotus super 7 .... if we could change to a CA we would have you looked here
thminiman
really, so the oppurtunities for more power, allbeit not much, from the 2.0 are outweighed by the lightness of the 1.8? thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it
SYKOV6
how much power do ya need? you can only get so much to the ground using a factory/road type suspesion set up. then it becomes unpredictable and prolly abit dangerous
thminiman
yea, ive thaught about suspension etc 2, im really just trying to get my head around it before anything actually gets under way... im not after insane amounts of power but i cant really afford to do many things more than once so im just asking around to see what people would reccomend etc

I got it read in the end. Was just annoying as i was on dial up at the time and i had to keep going back pages. lol. Supose not many people care about the old engine tho right. I was kinda looking for a full run down powerwise as you did each mod and the times etc with them but this is alot to ask. Am very interested as i have just brought a ca for my escort and am waiting on the funds to pull it down and rebuild it properly. (Am still unsure exactly where i want to go with this engine). Also it might have been in the site but what turbo were/are you running? ps. also just in general found the site hard to navigate around. hard to find what your looking for. In the end found it tho. I think it was partly because i was on dial up and getting pissed of at the slow modem.
