escortman
hey doin up a panelvan with the 1600 sport motor . i already hav a sierra gb but are unsure on teh mods needed to fit it . i think i need to shorten teh drive shaft and make the hole in teh tunnel further back . but wat else is needed. im also supercharging it with 1 of tehm 4agze ones is this a good option as i heard they bolt straight on to teh 1600 block cheers
Leebo3
Yeah just drill a new hole in the tunnel, may be easier just getting a new drive shaft and you will probably need a new clutch to fit the box

Toucan
Have a scan through some of the older threads the 5spd topic has been covered millions of times As for the supercharger I think you are on your own, nobody on this site has s/c'd a xflow, although kris is currently building up a s/c'd pinto. I know lots of members are keen to try it though so If you do it make sure you take lots of photos for us so we can see how it goes
atropine
also could try PMing Eddie W as he has a lot of knowledge with escorts.. and i think he mentioned supercharging them a few times.. havent seen him around in a while though
Guest kris
Before I put the pinto block in the Sport I had a look to see if I could fit the SC14 supercharger (or the SC12 that I also have) to the xflow and I couldn't. The problem was that the SC clouted the engine mounts, as the engine is too short. The only possibility was to mount the SC up high (off the head) directly on to a custom manifold (no intercooler), but then the inlet and outlets were the wrong way around. Some people have mounted the SC upside down to fix this sort of problem, but I am not sure that's a good idea. It was all just too ugly. The only solution I thought was reasonable was to fit an old nonxflow head and do the direct attachement above. You could probably do it if you did a really simple install without EFI and no intercooler. Sorry to say this, but the pinto is a better choice. esky boi
For the 5 speed conversion, just get hold of a Sierra flywheel and clutch.. then for the driveshaft a one peice item from an auto escort - does the job perfectly. You'll also need to relocate the mounts. To do this you need to cut the original Escort ones out and place them further back. Or else you can get away with just bolting the 5spd up through the floor with some decent plates to strengthen it. Umm youll find that the original mounts get in the way of the gearbox if you decide to bolt it up through the floor. So what I did was just cut along the bottom of them then bend them inwards and weld up the gap.. The transmission tunnel will need a little bit of bashing out around the bellhousing area, youll see what I mean.. nothing a hammer wont fix Then you need to relocate the gearlever hole, you'll find that it wants to hit the handbrake lever in 2nd and 4th, what I did was just cut the stick and weld it so that it sat straight up, not on that backwards angle you know? The reverse light switch is different too, but all you need to do is unscrew the Sierra one and swap it with the esky one, they have exactly the same thread so yea. I think thats pretty much it aye, excuse any mistakes, can't be bothered proof reading it haha.. sounds hard to do, but its really pretty straightfoward

Toucan
Haha yep, the one at the back of the gearbox with two little prongs.. Though in 90% of escorts the two prongs will have broken off by now
