Guest escort_boy
how does a quick steer rack work and how is it differnt to a normal steering rack?
atropine
well its different in that, you turn the wheel the same amount but the wheel turn faster.. so full lock is less steering wheel rotation.. not sure how they work.. i have a picture in my head but meh.. CaMpylobacter
same principle as diffs - the ratio of teeth from crown whel to pinion changes to give a faster/slower ratio - quick rack = more teeth on the pinion.... thats how i see it anyway

Jerm
A rack and pinion setup in simple terms is like a gear and a shaft with teeth cut into it... so to make a quick rack you just need a taller ratio. So the ratio between the turning of the wheel and how far the rack moves horizontally is larger than normal. but any friction on the wheels will be increased by the same ratio. Get what i mean? I think thats rigt anywyas.
Guest Eddie W
They have one extra tooth on the pinion and the same number of teeth on the rack. the teeth on the rack are loweredd however to accomodate the larger dia pinion required. From memory it drops the ratio from 3.5 turns lock to lock to 2.25. Once you've driven an Esky with a quick rack you'll never want to go back. Particularly on the loose but also I would imagine for drifting. They allow you to catch and balance a slide much quicker and easier. However because the rack is thinner where the teeth are, they are more prone to bending if you hit sometning hard with the wheel. They used to be an arm and a leg in my day but I believe you can get a kit in UK to fit in the original housing. Eddie
