Hay Im quite ned in the car modification, I have only ever foucused on anything you can stick in and stereo so any help with these would be great thanks:

1. Srings: Has anyone had exsperience with air struts? no of prices and how smooth the ride? If I have a car certed with springs and then change the suspension im guessing I need to recert?

2. Tints: Had to pull my last tints off for a warrent so Im looking to do it legal this time, from what ive seen 35% arnt dark, is there any point in putting them on? Is there anyway i can get a cert or similar to make darker tints legal?

3. Lumpy cams: Im looking for more exsperince with this, has anyone got one? how much dose it increase preformance and how dose it effect petrol consumtion?

4. Vechiel structure: If I was to change the brake lights on my car which required chopping into the shell of the car is this going to effect the structual integredy of the car. Also If I was to cut into the boot in order to fit a stereo will this effect it?

5. Brake light: Do all cars need to have a top brake light in the back window? Even if the car is produced without one?

6. Painting: I would like to primmer the car as it will be resprayed, however there may be some time inbetween this, am I able to leave the car primmered? I was told that primmer is not water proof?

7. Battery: I would like to move the battery to the boot, am I able to ground the negative of the battery to the chassy?

8. Fiber glass: Where is the best place to get fiberglass materials in nelson? and what are the names of each material I will need? and what kind of price am I looking at?

9. Engine mods: Pod filter/intercooler, any feed back on these? how well do they increse preformance?

10. Rust: Finally rust, Im planning to cut out the rust, weld on stainless steal and and then fiberglass. Are there any better methods?

Any help is very much apreciated thanks.

Holy shit.

Unless your car is turbo, you won;t need and intercooler (doubt a mini turbo would need one regardless) don't bother with a pod filter, just get a "bolt-on" type like ram-flo etc

Wouldn't bother with fibreglass over steel, just use filler, much easier to use. Primer is generally not waterproof, wouldn't be a good idea unless it's gonna be covered. Brake light-No. Lights, probably not, if it'sonly the panels. Stereo is dependant on your boot construction. Cam-Depending on duration lift etc, it can change performance dramatically, but at the cost of smooth running at low revs, and anything that increases performance engine wise will almost definately increase fuel consumption, especially cams. Tints-35% are ok really. Springs/air struts...All I know is that air struts are a shit idea.

My suggestion? Sell the mini:P

hay thanks for the help, sorry bout the confusion but I umm dont have a mini, I have a ke30 lol, im only using the user name as it was the same name as i use on a number of other websites. Im thinking of dropping a 4agze turbo into it. Would I be able to put a intercooler on it then lol?

Im not sure about the stainless part, I believe that just good old steel plates are used, as stainless is a bastard to weld (am I right here...)

Its sounds like there are a few gaps in your knowledge of the workings of engines which might lead to problems down the track. I suggest finding a detailed website outlining a build up and see what porblems/snowball effects they had. (by snowball effects I mean, takes head off to do cam work, finds buggered pistons, removes pistons find shagged crank...etc etc)

Also before you do mods, ask yourself "what do I want this car for?" a street car wont want locked diffs, or really aggressive cams.

Good luck :D

what sorta car dude??

assuming its a mini form your name....

battery is in the boot already, turbo it with a metro turbo engine, use steel plates over rust, stainless is a waste of time even if its do-able, dont cut the boot to fit in stereo the body will flex, same with the tail lights if you take too much out, you wont be able to do bags on a mini, and you wont need a high stop tail light unless your car has been re-vinned after 1991.

holla

Hay Im quite ned in the car modification, I have only ever foucused on anything you can stick in and stereo so any help with these would be great thanks:

* takes a deep breath..

1. Srings: Has anyone had exsperience with air struts? no of prices and how smooth the ride? If I have a car certed with springs and then change the suspension im guessing I need to recert?

Yes recert is necessary. By air struts I'm assuming you're talking about air-bag suspension. This will cost your around $3-4000. Ride is smooth but it's no good for performance applications such as track work etc.

2. Tints: Had to pull my last tints off for a warrent so Im looking to do it legal this time, from what ive seen 35% arnt dark, is there any point in putting them on? Is there anyway i can get a cert or similar to make darker tints legal?

No you can't cert your tints. Trust me, I tired. I have heard of some companies getting permission from the LTSA for very dark tints. But you won't get it, trust me I tired. If you have a station wagon or a van you are allowed to have darker tints on the rest of the car from the drivers window back. Best thing to do is to find a decent wof man who doesn't care and do it anyway. Run 35% on the front and put 20 or 25% on the rear. Many cops/wof men are confused as to whether you are allowed to do this as it's an old rule. I have my capri like that for the last 4 years and never had to take em off. Now I run %25 all-round on my Falcon and no problems there either... but as you get older cops/wof men let you away with that kinda shit. They use it as 'anti-boyracer legislation'

3. Lumpy cams: Im looking for more exsperince with this, has anyone got one? how much dose it increase preformance and how dose it effect petrol consumtion?

Most people with warmed up motors have em. Especially the n/a boys. It increases the performance by providing more lift to the valves and more overlap in somecases between the amount of time the exhaust is open relative to the inlet. This increases airflow at certain rpm thus more power. If you go too wild with your cam, you will actually loose power down low in the revs and idle/drivability also is effected. Of course, anything that increases power increases petrol consumption. If you're worried about that then don't bother.

4. Vechiel structure: If I was to change the brake lights on my car which required chopping into the shell of the car is this going to effect the structual integredy of the car. Also If I was to cut into the boot in order to fit a stereo will this effect it?

perhaps.. maybe not. depends on how much cutting we're talking about..

5. Brake light: Do all cars need to have a top brake light in the back window? Even if the car is produced without one?

No, only cars that came out with them need them. However, I put one on my capri as it does help wankers bumping into the back of you in town!

6. Painting: I would like to primmer the car as it will be resprayed, however there may be some time inbetween this, am I able to leave the car primmered? I was told that primmer is not water proof?

Correct. Primer is porus ie, it lets moisture soak through. This is why you often see grey primered cars driving around with black paint roughly sprayed on. Even a light, random covering of black will stop most of the moisture. even the gaps will be covered in the protectant of the paint. However, you will become instant pig-bait in a primered up car like that.

7. Battery: I would like to move the battery to the boot, am I able to ground the negative of the battery to the chassy?

yes. Don't forget to put a fuse close to the battery in the pos+ as a thick cable running through the car, if it ever wears and touches it will most surely burn your car to the ground.

8. Fiber glass: Where is the best place to get fiberglass materials in nelson? and what are the names of each material I will need? and what kind of price am I looking at?

no idea. Mitre 10 sell fibre-glass packs in different sizes. I used them to fix up my body kit etc. About $20 a pack. It's a cunt to work with.

9. Engine mods: Pod filter/intercooler, any feed back on these? how well do they increse preformance?

don't expect magic from a pod filter despite what you read in the magazines. But a correctly placed cold intake can give a couple of hp. Don't ever, ever, buy one of those cheap Ramflo filters..

Intercoolers are great if your car is turbocharged and mean you can run a lot more boost without detionation. If it isn't turbocharged then... it will just be stupid.

10. Rust: Finally rust, Im planning to cut out the rust, weld on stainless steal and and then fiberglass. Are there any better methods?

Cutting out serious rust and then welding on new steel is the usual method. I don't know what the fibre-glass is for?? most people use body-filler to smooth it up. If you don't know what you're doing then it will be a mess...

Any help is very much apreciated thanks.

no problemo. any more questions?

turboing a 4agze is not hard me and my m8 are doing it now , in saying this we have access to all the welding ,cutting, planing, and all other bits of machinary but its been simple so far , just need to get the computer sorted and it sweet . id stick with the 4age to be honest u dont wanna go straight into that kinda stuff first off u'll end up fucking it , be like most people here and get a standard motor then slowly move bit by bit after that , that way u get an idea of how everything works and so on , ke30 nice....

How exactly does that work. Theres just a law saying your windows must let at least 35% light though so if it was darker itd fail

More detail please
