Soooo - pulled plugs off the ABS pump/I don't know what it's really called - sound has disappeared. Gosh it sounds lovely without the sound! I have spotted that chris r might be wrecking one...
-
Ahhh that might explain the 2 different ways I've seen to disengage 4WD...one on the gearbox and one on the snout of the diff. No idea what I have. Will have to get it up on stands...

It has ABS on the back window and ALB as a warning light so I'm guessing that = ABS. So you're saying it won't have a viscous coupler but an electric clutch instead? Sorry if I've missed the point...!
-
I like the simplicity of pulling fuses too!
-
Sweet, that sounds good to me too, no VTEC, but there is ABS and a funky viscous coupling 4WD that must have some sort of solenoids in it. Next time I get some sun I'm going to pull some stuff apart!

Correct,5 seconds on, closer to 2 seconds off no matter what speed you're moving/gear you're in, provided you're moving.
-
It doesn't Good idea - will get motivated later, the noise is literally identical in frequency and pitch with old belts and new belts Hmmm interesting - not something I'd considered. Any ideas of how I'd check this? So just to add to the symptoms list. No noise when Car at idle. car in neutral, regardless of rpm. Car in gear loaded up against the handbrake but not moving. Noise when As soon as it's moving in gear even if just accelrating from idle @~800 rpm. Coasting downhill with clutch in, or in neutral. TL:DR Moving = noise, not moving = no squeal I can also confirm that the lights still flicker when the squeal begins

New belts only on today - will drive around after dark and confirm. I'll also have a play with clutch riding to see if it makes a difference.
-
Replaced all 3 belts, alternator, power steering and air con belts - still makes the noise. I'm suspicious it's something to do with 4WD now (Beagles are fitted with 'Real Time 4WD' similar to a CRV - perhaps it's a pump, as all diff and gearbox oil has been replaced too.

I get it - makes way more sense than what I tried/eventually achieved!

Ok so now that you're enlightened about how to put the electric motor back together - how do you do it?! I did it recently with 3 people and a collection of tweezers...

Unless it's a Honda C50 bikes are wayyyyyy more expensive in my experience per km. Replacing tyres every 5-10,000km, sprockets/chains etc. My best run on a trip was in a 1NZ-FE powered '08 Corolla wagon. 3.9l/100km Nelson to Oamaru - but then it's down hill...

Lol'd at VG's battle with his mrs. I get around 15km/L in the Toyota Wish - jumped in it today for the first time since filling it at the weekend. 7.6km/L. Yup, I think she enjoys winding me up.

Sweet! I was going to ask about the seatpost/rails - looks mint. Internally routing the cables is a cool idea, how much of a mission was it to get them in/out at the correct spot?

Possibly alternator bearings - new belt is on its way, will install tomorrow - tried to re-tension old one today with no joy. When the new one arrives I'll see how it goes around the block with no belt - just as an elimination tool. When still it doesn't make a noise, regardless of revs. I don't think it has ever been lowered, I swappped stereos between the Shuttle and Beagle tonight and it has no sign of boy germs. Cheers for the interest, it's sooo ugly.

Belts all have tension - but are all also original looking - there's 3(!) of them, modern cars and their excessive parts made for people with tiny hands Interesting - but that'd get faster as road speed increased? I'm thinking this is logic, more used to fan belts that squeal - then catch up with pulley speed and stop. Same noise at full lock. Cheers all, I'm a get me some new belts and find a friend with tiny hands (my wife already said no...).
-
You mean I have to go out to the cold and check - alright I'll be back! AC on/off doesn't affect the noise.
-
Basically a late model Honda Shuttle with 4WD and a 6 speed manual.
-
Righto, new Beagle has an intermittent issue, sounds like fan belt squeal, but pretty consistent regardless of engine/road speed, ie 5 seconds of squeal - 2 seconds of peace and repeat. - It doesn't happen at idle when stationary, but does when idling with the clutch and rolling. - Final symptom, the lights slightly dim as the squeal begins. Any ideas? Cheers, Will

Gah, if you see them come up let me know...
