Grumbles daily RN40 Lux.
Vintage Grumble replied to Vintage Grumble's topic in Projects and Build Ups
So, im not overly keen on the black hubbies, looking at getting some hub caps like this: and run them on black rims, possibly with wide white walls like this: (but without all the other chrome obviously) I know this is hardly an original set up, but think it will suit the ute really well, thoughts? -

Abuse viewtopic.php?f=18&t=27497 So, I now have a 1981 RN40 Hilux. Its powered by the mighty 1600cc 12R motor, has four on the tree, and a sweet bench seat. The chap selling it was interested in a small cheap to run car, and agreed to take the alto as part trade (I was fucking stoked TBH) I met the guy at a testing station, as the ute had failed its wof on rear brake inballance, so he was having it retested, it failed again, so they swaped the shoes from side to side and pissed around a bit, and it failed again, so I low balled the guy and got it piss loads cheaper. I got this the weekend before nationals, drove it to my olds and slapped it in their shed. I went to work on the brakes, rebuilding the cylinders, slapping new shoes on it, and giving it a good adjust and bleed. Went for a recheck, and it passed by 3%, YUS! Me and the woman then got the sugar soap out and spent hours scrubbing the interior, it went from black to a beautiful shade of tan. I then slapped some lowing blocks in the back, and reset the front bars, which was a total cunt (which I was not expecting TBH) I moved them the exact same amount, and tensioned them the same, but it came out cock loads higher on one side, so took much fucking about to get it to sit fairly level. WALLLL OF TEXT!! Time for some pics. The night I got it, A few days later, and about 50mm lower, And some random shots for all the single ladies, The ol gal's in pretty good nick all round really. The main problem with it is its been resprayed by a retard, and the paints not sticking to the primer, im pretty sure it will all fall off pretty soon, so a respray will be needed in the next few years. It only has one small spot of rust in it which I will fix before its future respray. It may also get an engine transplant after I finish my other projects, i'm super excited about this really.

Well, I did a few things to this, stripped and repainted the bumpers, re-glued the hood lining on, took some dents out of it and repainted the bottom half of the right side, fixed up lots of small things, and gave it a general clean up. It was also making a lot of funny noises as it had fucked CV's, fucked front wheel bearings, fucked gearbox bearings, and heinous piston slap (was using 1.5L of oil every 500km) but I managed to fix all of these funny sounds in under 30mins, by installing a shiney new head unit. I also bought a block off Mr Oskar for a future rebuild due to engines fuckedness. Mr 5macks also gifted me a set of brand new 1mm over size pistons he just happened to have? and a sweet poster of the Suzuki small car/ute/van range. I had been driving this to work every day for a few months, and began to realise just how shit house the running gear was, as mentioned before, the CV's, gearbox, wheel bearings and engine were all dieing. It also had fucked shocks, a huge crack in the windscreen, was covered in dents, and all the ball joints were as loose as your mothers. I decided I wasn't going to spend any money on fixing up the horrid little cunt of a car that it was (dont get me wrong, they are neat little cars, but this was a very poor example of one) and that I needed a ute. So I part traded its ass on an RN40 Hilux. Happiest day of my life. THE END.

I printed out a degree wheel and checked it, as me and math do NOT get along (even simple math such as this) and it is TDC-10-20-30 (I did the old screw driver down the plug hole to find TDC) Seems to be running pretty well. Cheers gents.
-
When I went to do this, I realised the pulley has got four marks on it (was feeling around in the dark and could only feel one notch) I know the first is TDC, but am sort of guessing the next 3 are 10 20 30 deg (seemed like you could fit 9 notches at that spacing on 1/4 / 90 deg of the pulley) so I timed it to the second notch, and it seems to run a bit better. Would be nice to know what each notch is tho, guess I need to buy a degree wheel.

95?!?! do I look like a gold mine owner? Cheers for the info boss.
-
Hello, what would the std timing on one of these be? 8-10? I'm having trouble finding a clear answer on teh nets. Sounds like some have up to four marks on the pulley, mine only has one luckly. Regards, VG.

Kinda, SKF closed, and then the company I work for now became an SKF distributor. Damon (Dirks old boss) told me he cant get them cheaper than the places listed above. The ones Dirk was talking about are probably just run of the mill std ones. If you could find out the brand those places sell, i'm sure you could bring them in for cheaps, now would be a good time to do this.

Cardwell's and Kendall racing supplies (was told it was Kendall race cars, but they dont seem to exist) are the ones to try so im told.
-
One problem with pricing them through industrial places is they will (or should) price top shelf ones for automotive/aerospace usage, the only ones I could get through the bearing company I used to work for that would be safe to use/last a while were Fluro brand, and they are farking pricey, like $2-$300 each for a 16/20mm one. The ones I found that were fairly cheap, were made for motorsport, so met all the standards and shit. One of the places was Cardwells/Etchells I think, and the other was "something" motorsports? Will get a hold of my mate and find out soon.
-
I see what you did there. I priced some up for a mate not so long ago for a hard cone 4x4 truck, i'll ask him if he can remember where I told him to go get them.
-
The proper teflon lined ones can be expensive, but there is two places in Auckland (cant remember the names sorry) that do a lot of american motorsport stuff, they sell good quality ones pretty cheap, say $30.00ea rather than $200.00ea. And they will last a shit load longer if you can keep then clean and dry.

I will need a portable wireless and many batteries. -
Yeh, I really should, aint even touched it in a good 4 or so months. I need to sell motorbike to get cash to pay for paint, as I spent paint money on hilux. Also, I have to do drainage work on lawn, so shed no longer floods, so I can work on car while not standing/lying in a lake. So its all the rains/monies fault.

Thank you for the info, happy sailing captain.

Could you be so kind, as to tell a gentlemen, what the exhaust set up on this vagina moistener is? Also, interesting about unpluging of stuff, and making it run better, I have a feeling Dud's one is not running 100% either.

I just have to say, after seeing this IRL, its sooooooo fucking sweet/I wish you were my dad.
