  1. First run out went without a hitch, apart from me flooding it at startup. Experimenting with outboard angles and the like, old outboard didn't have any provision for that because it was rusted solid. Daughter even bagged a legal snapper.... All I could get was just undersize.
  2. No I haven't, most people I've talked to say this or a 9.9 is ideal. 15 is max rated for this old hull. I'll see how this "new" 8 horse goes. At least being "brand name" it has better resale than a ulong ding-dong.
  3. I'm going to repair it and throw it on bookface placemarket to try recoup a bit. That's a couple of weeks away
  4. Procured a driveshaft, but I'm over that motor. Bought this 1997 Mercury 8hp for $1400. Has a warranty and less than 10hrs from new. Has a few marks on the cowl but underneath that it's like brand new.
  5. Well shit. Fabbed up a Bush out of truck air line. Tried it out. Still not getting full throttle. Looked at a schematic of the twist grip. More bushes/roller arrangements missing. Pulled twist grip apart. Broke some wires. Trip into town to get wire/soldering iron. Make rollers out of airline. Fix broken wires. Reassemble. Yay finally full throttle. Brother in law said it was idling too high and it wouldn't go into gear. Put into gear manually and prop turns. Can hear a clunk inside the midsection so pulled its pants off. Culprit.... Broken drives shaft. The small part is meant to be connected above the water pump impeller. Also evidence of previous repair higher up. It's been cracked for ages. I'm giving this engine one more roll of the dice. If I can't get another drive shaft, I'm buying a later motor. I'm over the fricking thing
  6. Thought I'd do a pull cord as it was on the verge of parting company. Googled the shit out of it. Replacement was finicky but with assistance from Miss18 and wifey it was done. Managed to break a crucial part This opens the choke on the carb. Thought I was in for a mission to find. Went to local Johnson agent. Well bugger me on the shelf!! Fitted and all appears good. Dragged it out TO Whananaki South (where bach is) offloaded onto hard. Next morning me and Miss18 went up to the mangroves for a fish. Umm fucking embarrassing. When paddleboarder passes you you're in trouble. Anyhoo get to pozzie and cast lines in. I pulled cover off and hello only getting 1/2 throttle. Did a couple of adjustments on cable. Ran better but still only getting 3/4 throttle. Had a gander and find a Bush is missing out of the assemblage Another call to Marine North. No go ex USA. I'm gonna try bodgey something out of truck nylon air line. Won't be out there until Friday. I'll update whether successful
  7. I need to pass. Wednesday next week I'm doing food run for family at the beach. Soz
  8. Latest little mission on this has been replacing the drain bung. Some muppet must have lost the bung out of it, and screwed a completely incorrect metal plug into it. Just horrible. Perusing TradeMe under marine drains, bilge drains, every other description under the sun didn't produce anything that was a 3 bolt mount like this had. Eventually googling 3 bolt plug (or something that it wasn't really how I'd describe it) I found a hit. It took me to a live Trademe(?!?) auction. Nairn brand from Smart Marine. Bought two, ones a spare. Installed and its ready for sea trials. Also built a rough frame and covered it up with a tarp so it doesn't fill up with leaves or water As you can see it keeps the water out.....
  9. Finally towed it into work to acquire WOF. While here executed the weld repairs on the transom. They look like crap, but we all know the magic a grinder can do. Now let's see if it passes. I found an issue with red light facing forward from the taillight wiring. Black RTV fixed that.
  10. Scored some 13x5 trailer wheels for $180 locally off Marketplace. Smashed out an axle this afternoon. Unfortunately the new wheels don't go into the spare carrier. Track has increased 60mm or so, about 20mm higher than before. Left to do. Fabricate a new spare carrier. Cut the old one out. Waterblast and paint wheels and axle. Make new wider guard mounts and fit Touch up paint after modifications. WOF. Boat needs engine mounting, I've decided to bolt it on permanent until I can find a 15hp. A complete new drain bung you can operate without a spanner. Wish list is a screen, canopy and a depth sounder. Next year.....
  11. Thanks for offer mate. Too big, it was high enough with the 12s. Ideal size would be the 185/50 13s
  12. Doing a wof pre inspection found a rumbly bearing. Oh well I'll take them to work and push out for samples. How it happened I don't know but blew a hub apart. Much swearing insues. In typical fashion there are 4 different hub/drum configurations on Daihatsu Mira. It appears they are made of the rare element unobtainium. Purchased this kit But....... Cannot build axle until I have some rims. These are proving more difficult to get than I thought...... May need to blow budget and buy some new galv wheels... Damn
  13. Trailer nearly done. Looks way better. Still need to fit snubbing block and rear rollers. And brand new plate/reg today.
  14. Continuing to remove the blue paint, am getting there. Thought I'd remove lights etc so I can make a proper job of it. Well not happy with the twist and tape wiring connections, the soldered on wires inside the lights and the homemade number plate light. All new stuff coming tomorrow. Also going to add clearance lamps onto the taillight mounts to aid with night reversing. Ive also got rid of the god awful pool noodle shit as the hull wore straight through it. I had mentioned this to a workmate and front up to work this morning to a couple of really good second hand rollers and an "axle" to chop up. Trademe purchase of a rubber snubbing block for the front gets rid of the pool noodle at the other end. NO PICS..... Typical
  15. Got the transom corner cap home and took to it with a sanding disc, doesn't look too bad. Once I get trailer finished, I'll need to get a plate, register it and get it wofd. I'll tow it to work and TIG it to the transom top. I've been working through replacing all the (few) steel nuts and bolts with stainless items.
  16. Popped into work to use TIG. I've only used one once and that was for about 30 seconds when I was in high school. It's pretty ugly but should come up good enough with a grind. That was on how welder was set and with zero guidance from anyone. I'm quite proud of it, for basically a first timer
  17. Keep at it man. You'll have this done in no time!
  18. Urgh. Wire wheeling the trailer sucks. I think the pipe old boy used was a bit average to start with. Frame had a lot of popped through scale rust. So a liberal coating of silver cold galv should see that right. Pics when finished
  19. I don't give a rats ass if you're not OS car, more about comradirie. As I've got a shit tonne of work to do, I'll drop ol mate @rb drifter into being the game master
  20. Hektik F@BrIc@Ti0n If Aaron's not too busy tomorrow I'll ask him nicely to burn it together. Once that's done I'll add a filler of 6mm into the handle and burn that in as well.
  21. So I googled about the transom corner, nothing. So I'm making one with the help of the engineer at work. He plasma cut this plate out (first time use) and I'm about to tidy it up Also bought some essentials I've also got another outboard that was thrown in the mix that I didn't realise he had acquired to pillage for bits
  22. So, back story. Dad bought this little gem off trademe, looked good in the pics, not so good in the flesh. It had fallen off the back of a ute and broke the left transom corner cap and the rope guide on the front. It's a 12'6 Fyran, tiller steer. He paid stuff all for it and dragged it North on a car trailer. He built a little trailer to put under it using some pipe and rollers etc from the scrappies. It's not flash but it is solid. It has a 1987 Johnson 8.8hp outboard, again nothing to look at. He was visiting a few weeks back and said he wanted to sell it. He'd owned it for 3 or 4 years and used it twice, both times me and him went for a fish. Me and wifey had a discussion and a phone call was made the next night and a deal struck for my AG200 and some cash. A week later it was delivered and I pushed it around the back of the house. The plan is to make it look a bit better and give it a thorough going over and add in bits that will make it more functional. First order of business was some new taillight lenses as they were nearly clear It was a pain to move so scrounge up an old jockey wheel, repaired the tyre and burned it on Was walking along lovingly stroking the gunwale and holy shit, heaps the rivets were either missing or loose. Got jiggy with the riveter
