  1. Dyno day. Glen beat on the poor old girl like a rented mule and it took it all like a champ. Only had one small issue with spark plug boots not being tight enough and it starting missing at high boost. That was easy fixed and it ended up making 460RWKW at 25psi. I still have a new intercooler to fit and then it'll get a new tune but it won't change much. If I thought it was frightening before I got a whole new level of violence to learn about. Graph shows old turbo tune and new turbo tune at both boost levels for each.
  2. its all coming together nicely. i had a fault with the idle speed controller which turned out to be a short in the loom so i fixed that. i needed more travel in the clutch to fully disengage it so i changed the master to a 13/16 bore and its perfect now. honestly the clutch is like your driving a corolla, its that good. so i have been doing some Ks in it to bed the clutch before the dyno on Friday and everything is working perfectly, im super stoked with it all. i cant really give it any stick because the tune is wrong for this turbo and it might shit itself so im being gentle. which sucks. the other thing i did was make a tool to aid adjusting the cams during the dyno session on firday. its really hard to see what your doing and its hard to accurately adjust them so im hoping this tool will make life easier. 2021-08-01_04-21-50 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-26 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-08-01_04-21-33 by sheepers, on Flickr
  3. right so, its all back together. but first, new clutch. its a niteparts designed unit which holds heaps of torque but drives like a normal car. this thing is huge. check out the friction plate on top of the Giken twin plate unit! 20210713_184945 by sheepers, on Flickr 20210713_184938 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-44-05 by sheepers, on Flickr 20210713_183646 by sheepers, on Flickr right so then i put the motor back in the car. had to mod the turbo dump pipe. also had to mod the intercooler piping by the throttle body to include a new larger blow off valve. other things done include all new pipe work to and from the turbo and all new hoses for the wastegate. im waiting on a new intercooler which should be here in a couple of weeks too. and tonight i took it for a drive round the block, so far so good. noo doortz though as it needs to be tuned with the new turbo. its booked on the dyno on the 6th of August. 2021-07-21_08-32-36 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-32-14 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-21_08-32-24 by sheepers, on Flickr
  4. Yea the little hypergear has had a hard life. But onwards! I'm really hoping for a broader earlier torque curve. We shall see.....
  5. i cleaned the things. then i put the motor back together. the cam gears have a slot in them for the dowel that is too big. the slot in the cam gear is 5.4 whilst the pin is 5mm. doesn't sound like much but its a good 5 degrees of play when you set up the cam timing. so to fix it i made some stepped dowels out of a 5.4mm drill bit. once id done that i re-dialed the cams to get them right. 2021-07-04_04-14-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-14-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-14-56 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-07-04_04-15-02 by sheepers, on Flickr
  6. we're all familiar with the term "project scope creep" aren't we. well, im still waiting for my clutch to arrive and while ive been waiting ive been thinking how easy it is to work on the motor while its out of the car. so i bought a new turbo. 2021-06-27_04-04-44 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-27_04-04-56 by sheepers, on Fickr New turbo is a Garrett G30-770 with a 0.83A/R exhaust housing. im looking for a fatter torque curve and this should provide it. along with more power but thats beside the point. the old turbo has been spewing oil into the inlet tract and everything is filthy. 2021-06-27_04-03-45 by sheepers, on Flickr so i got to wondering if the pistons and valves were covered in burnt yuck carbon oil mess. so i found out, 2021-06-27_04-03-33 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-27_04-03-26 by sheepers, on Flickr so yea its pretty clean on the whole so ill chuck a new gasket in it and put it back together. still waiting on my clutch and now ive ordered a new intercooler as well.
  7. in a week or so the crown is going to get the seats fixed and a couple of other things. one of which is a carpet for the boot. i decided that the old sub box i had made took up to much valuable boot space so i made a new one that goes hard up against the back seats. its out of the way up there and makes the boot much more usable. so thats done now. heres the old one, 2021-06-06_02-57-26 by sheepers, on Flickr and this is the new one. 2021-06-06_12-10-19 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-06_12-10-36 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-06_12-10-43 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-06_02-57-33 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-06_02-57-20 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-06-06_02-57-13 by sheepers, on Flickr
  8. No fucking shit. Jesus christ they never looked that good the day they were built. Good work man.
  9. tonight i made a shield to go over the digital dash so it doesn't reflect off the inside of the window at night. fairly simple thing, just held on with double sided foam tape. ill see tomorrow how well it functions. 2021-05-24_06-54-34 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-24_06-54-28 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-24_06-54-18 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-24_06-53-58 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-24_06-53-44 by sheepers, on Flickr
  10. cheers for that. im 99% sure it has a vent on the gearstick mount plate doohicky and ill check that it actually is one. points to note, it was fine for 2 years then it just started leaking for no reason so fucked if i know?
  11. so, everything is out and I've puled the bush out of the gearbox. i had to make a tool to bash it out. i measured 0.06mm float between the driveshaft and the bush. i dont see this as being an issue and i cant see how this amount of play would cause the lip seal to leak as soon as you drive at motorway speeds. got any ideas as to why it keeps pumping oil out the rear gearbox seal? the seal i put in it isnt a directional one to be fair, however it is the correct size and ive put 3 different ones in it and its shit itself every time. there is no drive line vibration at all. the gearbox is less than 5000Ks old i dunno what else? also im not happy with the clutch so i going to try something different. 2021-05-16_03-07-03 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-54 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-42 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-16_03-06-36 by sheepers, on Flickr
  12. went for a cruze. it was great. 2021-05-16_03-06-24 by sheepers, on Flickr
  13. things are pretty great with this car. just got to sort out the seats and some carpet but thats for another day. i bought some new rear disks for it a while back because the ones i had were turbo fucked. minimum thickness is about 11 mm and one was down to 9. so yea, in they went. not a big job but still. 2021-05-01_12-59-34 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-01_12-59-28 by sheepers, on Flickr
  14. pulled it to bits and got it ready to remove the motor. ive ordered some parts which willtake ages to get here so im in no hurry. i thought id tidy up some stuff while im waiting. water return pipe from the turbo went into the original spigot and the second one was just blanked off. it looked a bit dumb so i pulled the stainless tubes out, welded up the holes and welded a dash 6 nipple on lower down. 2021-05-09_07-04-13 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-09_07-04-05 by sheepers, on Flickr then i thought id make a new, smaller radiator reservoir and windscreen washer bottle because real-estate in that area is real tight and its a pain in the arse to get to anything in that space. not finished yet but getting there. cut some 75mm box section put a pie cut in the bottom to help clear the body work better weld caps on each end sand them up a bit weld the screw caps in still got to put the inlet outlet fittings in and mount the little electric motor for the windscreen washers but that shouldnt be a drama. ill just hide it underneath like i did for the V8 2021-05-11_08-14-23 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-29 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-35 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-05-11_08-14-41 by sheepers, on Flickr
  15. take the toyota one out and replace it. although im not so sure a replacement will be better but ill find out i suppose. having said that i have replaced the bush in many W58 type boxes with aftermarket parts and had no issues so we'll see.
  16. oh, hi!! so yea things have been great with this car. except the output bushing on the gearbox is flopping around and subsequently the output seal is leaking and flinging oil all over the exhaust. this is shit. the gearbox has only done a couple thousand Ks since it was brand new from Toyota. apparently this is fairly common on the new R154s which fucks me off even more. I've fucked around with changing the seal multiple times and all the other usual checks but it just keeps on leaking. cool. so to fix it i have to take the motor and box out because of the whole massive drive train/small car thing so out the motor comes. its fairly depressing taking a motor, that you have worked very hard on to make as new and shiny as you can, out of a car and seeing all the road grime and shit on it, as well as all the crap that goes everywhere when you start taking things apart. well, its what has to be done so away we go. not sure what else ill do while the motor is out. im not 100% happy with the clutch i put in it. its juddery and grabby at take off which sucks so that may change. fuck knows.............. anywho, first step, jack up your car. 2021-05-04_05-59-44 by sheepers, on Flickr
  17. car went to the paint shop to get the runs out of it and get the final cut and polish. i went and picked it up last night and it looks amazing. anywho, today i wanted to fix the exhaust where the flex joint had worn through because its the lowest point and its had a fucking over judder bars and whatnot and subsequently has a hole it in. step 1 - jack up your car. this is where things went wrong. 2021-04-25_02-55-42 by sheepers, on Flickr car slid off the jack on the way up. given what could have happened i got off extremely lightly. it bent the radiator support up and bent the bottom of the radiator real bad. it also bent the bottom of the front bumper. however, the radiator isn't leaking and the crank pulley is unscathed which is a fucking miracle given what happened. i was able to bash the rad support back down and i got most of the bend out of the bumper so it looks fairly normal again. fuck it could have been WAY worse.................. so yea, after dealing with that i moved on to fixing the zorst. cut out the fucked bit, made a new bit, tacked it in place, remove zorst from car and fully weld, add 4mm thick bash plate and put zorst back in car. 2021-04-25_02-55-49 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-55-55 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-02 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-09 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_02-56-21 by sheepers, on Flickr then it was time to wax the newly polished paint. that went well. it looks pretty ace tbh and yea, i cant take a photo that justifies how good it looks. but it looks good. take my word for it. 2021-04-25_05-34-27 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-18-48 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-19-23 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-25_06-32-09 by sheepers, on Flickr
  18. hey also, what are some good "mig welding 101" type videos on the you tubes? I've got a couple of guys here that want to learn and id like to get them to watch something as a basic introduction first.
  19. bought some carpet and put it on the box. then i put it in the car. fuck me, the hype over this sub is all fucking real. what a fucking unit! 2021-04-12_08-00-53 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-12_08-01-00 by sheepers, on Flickr
  20. ive had this Boston 12.5LF sitting around for a while so i decided to make a sub box for it. i had to make it a weird shape so i could get it right at the back and still close the tailgate. 18mm MDF with bitumous tape (basically the same as sound deadner) over the joints on the inside. ill cover it in either carpet or maybe some stretchy vinyl then its done. i need to make some sort of way of holding it down in the right place but also i need to be able to move it out of the way if im putting something large in the back. ill think of something. 2021-04-11_03-23-51 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-11_03-23-44 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-11_03-23-36 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-11_03-23-29 by sheepers, on Flickr
  21. remember a thousand years ago when i bought a link dash for this? well, the instructions for a link dash are fucking shit, if you ever buy one know that the indicator icons are referred to as "warning lights" and the indicator icons that are described in the instruction manual, badly, are just icons that don't work on every display skin. anywho whilst trying to figure this out i powered the wrong pin on the plug and something went bang. it took them two and a half months to fix it but its fixed now so i got on with the job of installing it. its now mounted up and working so now i need to configure the thousands of user definable display options and also get a few parameters that currently dont work, working. 2021-04-04_04-14-47 by sheepers, on Flickr 2021-04-04_05-18-02 by sheepers, on Flickr
  22. No hairdryer. Got it. Also I have some more chrome centre caps coming to replace the black ones.
  23. spent the day finishing the belt seal install and putting the door trims and whatnot back on. i had to cut the steel bit to bend it so it would fit around the curve of the back window. this resulted in the rubber lip being a bit distorted from bending it and its find of all over the show. does anyone have any tips on how i can get the rubber to change shape a bit or relax it a bit so it sits against the glass? 2021-04-03_04-58-57 by sheepers, on Flickr
  24. That is indeed a pisser. As a side note my dad did not have one of these. However my uncle did and I remember going places in the back. His was white with red seats and it was pretty rad if I recall. Lingpost.
