  1. The old man has a fancy stainless Bosch oven thing, and its crapped itself in various fashions 3 or 4 times in 4 years from new. He hates the damn thing, but the kitchen was designed for it so hard to replace
  2. God, how many other cool cars do you have casually stashed away? This is sweet
  3. A $20k gamble at that! Car is amazing though, I love 3 coupes so much, and this is done just so 90's NZ style, it rules my face clean off.
  4. I found out some years back, that those Arias pistons were meant to take a GSXR750 ring set, that was after B&H grooved them sadly. How did your end gaps turn out? When I stripped my motor down, the end gaps were massive (B&H gapped them etc) which is one of the reasons why I flagged the 4K
  5. They look much the same as yours - flat topped, 2 valve reliefs. I can't recall offhand what my combustion chamber volume was, but the motor was 11:1
  6. My block is zero decked, so you shouldn't lose compression. Give Graeme @ B&H a bell, he sorted the last lot
  7. FWIW, I also have a block to match the pistons, just needs rings
  8. If its only .010 over, I have a set of Arias forged pistons that would handle detonation/big revs well
  9. Never looked TBH, as there are usually plenty of 4AGEs on TM. Also if you don't like the Carib, why not get a Corolla BZ-T?
  10. Trouble with a 20v swap is they're all getting old and fucked now, and there are 20 valve stem seals to replace... Blacktop is way better, less reciprocating weight, more compression, bigger throttles, better flowing head. The only downside is that it has a gas tensioner set up instead of the spring loaded one, so cambelts are trickier to do
  11. Haha yeah I know what you mean, the wait can be frustrating! Especially for sweet convertible Impalas Not too much left to update sadly, the engine issue definitely left me demotivated! Cheers
  12. Haha thanks Ned...just trying to gee myself up to work on it again. Quite hard to be motivated now with it so far away, and so many other cars grabbing my attention!

  14. February 2013fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu Well - has been a pretty eventful couple of days! Car loaded up and ready to roll Went in and got a wheel alignment - was impressed, with the camber plates as the only form of adjustment it had just shy of 2.5 degrees negative camber! Had it set to 1.5 degrees, and stock castor for the time being. Made it intact to the workshop And thats where things started to go down hill... Even though I had booked in for a run up and tune, lots of other cars currently there were causing issues. Also my carbs needed a bit of tweaking (as I'd expected) and the dizzy was a tooth out too. First fire up went well, once the carbs were balanced - it sounds pretty amazing! Exhaust is quite quiet, but you can't hear it over the induction anyway Drove it around the block to go to the dyno entrance, and found it was dumping coolant all over the place :abusive: The lower radiator hose was too close to the alternator, and the fan chewed a hole through it. Shot down and grabbed a new hose and some more coolant, and threw it all back together. At this stage it was 5pm, so we ran out of time to do any tuning. Ran it up a few times on the dyno to give it some load, made a pretty reasonably 57kw at 6000rpm...it starts to go quite lean above 5000rpm so we didn't want to push it too much. It also has a pretty big flat spot around 3000, then comes on in a big way at 3500, about what I expected with this cam. Rodney, the workshop owner said once we get it tuned it should crack 70kw quite comfortably, and if it keeps making power over 7k then it may even touch 80kw, which I'd be pretty stoked with! From there, I went round to the cert mans workshop...sun was starting to set at this point He was pretty happy with the car, said if I want to lower the front more thats no issue Just need a driveshaft hoop, speedo calibration, nyloc nuts/lock washers on the diff flange and tighten the adjustable spring perches. With that out of the way, I began the mission home! With the T50, 4.1 diff and the smaller tyres, it sits at 3700 at 100k in 5th, so stays on cam. Between 4000 and the 5000rpm limit, it's actually pretty quick! It turns in quite well too, potentially to do with the diff. The spring rates are pretty well spot on, its firm without being ridiculously stiff, all the shocks are set at max soft, I think a bit of tweaking here will make it better over really ripply road surfaces. 10pm I got to BP in Otaki to top up the fuel - took a photo cause it looks pretty sweet under fluoro lights However that's about when it all went bad...went to leave, and no go. On cranking sounded like it had no compression...luckily some GCs went and got some tools and I started to pull it apart. Found that somehow the dowel that locates the camgear on the cam had come out, and had ground away the face of the cam :barfy: Managed to clean all the metal dust out of it, reinstall the timing gear and put it back together. However I must have cocked the timing marks up, as I couldnt get the dizzy timed up right, would either be too advanced or too retarded. At about 3am I gave up and called a tow truck, and had it taken home. So yeah - a few things to sort out, and I don't really have the budget or inclination to do anything about it. Pretty gutted to say the least!
  15. February 2013, pt2busy month this one! Yep... Filled it up with fuel tonight - 42 litres takes a damn long time to drain from fuel cans! Bonus, fuel gauge still works, albeit pretty slowly...was a bit concerned it might be dead after all these years of being empty. Light went out straight away though so at least I'll have some warning I was also impressed how quickly it got fuel to the carbs, given the Holley pumps are a push pump I was sort of expecting it to take a while to prime, but it was pretty near instant. Once I tightened up all the loose connections  this happened I'll have to get new washers for the carb fittings though, the ones I have are slightly too big, and they still weep a touch. Easy fix at least! Gave it its first wash in over a year! Ready to roll onto the trailer tomorrow. Also polished up the wiper arms, stainless steel comes up nicely! And dammit my exhaust is gonna scrape like a bitch on the road, it scraped coming out of the garage
  16. February 2013 Went with the angle tip in the end, the straight one was just too short, and the other ones were too long and looked stupid :barfy: So onto the final few jobs! *Bled up the brakes. Had an issue with the m/c being incorrectly assembled, figured it out and job's a goodun. Filled with Castol Response Super Dot 4, shouldn't boil too easily! *Filled the cooling system, found my pretty T bolt clamp on the water pump was too thick to fit properly between the alternator bracket and water pump outlet, so spilled a litre or so of coolant on the floor while I ran around looking for a normal clamp :Puzzled: Been 4 days so far with no leaks, so should be ok. Want to pressure test it before we go to Palmy though. It's not actually an antifreeze in there currently, just a non-glycol based inhibitor...was recommended not to use a glycol coolant with a new head gasket. *Replaced rear swaybar mount bushes..the ones the bar came with didn't actually fit in the mount for some reason? 100 series Corolla ones however fit quite nicely with 2mm trimmed off the flanges. So much grease Replaced the bumper and side indicator lenses, as the bumper ones were f@%ked, and the side ones were just old and faded. New vs old Got those new from Toyota some years back, front ones had to come from the Yahoo auctions - they're mint and cost me $13 Made up some rubber gaskets for the mirror bases today using an old inner tube...once they're mounted, all I need to do is fill it with fuel
  17. January 2013 Been super slack on updates with this - Christmas is never a good time to try and get this finished! Also, I bought myself an early xmas present Which both took up garage space and motivation However it's currently off at PPRE so I've got a few weeks to get all the last finicky bits done. Had no joy at all finding bumper end caps, so got a set from eBay. They're Thai replica crap of course, but needs must...with a bit of tweaking they actually fit alright. So slack I don't even have photos with the bumpers on the car! Also have a set of bumper indicator lenses coming from Japan, as one of them was broken, and had the wrong type of lens put on on it! Remade the rear section of the exhaust, as I wasn't quite happy with how the muffler sat....now it sits nice and tight, but I can't decide which tip to use...FWP I know:lol: Either the longer angled one or Thoughts? Also bled the rear brakes up last night - vacuum bleeder made it so much easier! Still took a bit to get fluid through, but given the system hasn't had fluid in it ever, I wasn't surprised. Quite nice to finally have all 3 pedals functioning as they should! Scarier still - dyno and cert booked for 20th of Feb
  18. December 2012 So I was planning on having it all done this week, but of course things never pan out as they should.... I was removing the front struts to swap to the new 250lb springs I bought, and bumped the strut and heard a PSSSHT. When I looked closer/wiggled the adjuster in the shock, gas and oil was leaking out. Not ideal! I sent it back to Stocks to see what the story was. Long story short, after 2 weeks, they supplied a new one under warranty, as some little brass thingy inside the shock was .5mm bigger than it should have been. Must have been a Friday shock! I took the opportunity to make the strut tops look pretty Also forgot to do the line from the radiator to the overflow bottle, so grabbed some more -6 and hose finishers to make it match On the interior side of things, I finally mounted the gauges properly, and went to install the centre console, only to find that when I tried to get 5th and reverse, the gear lever hit the surround :barfy: I guess when I initially bent the lever I didn't account for the surround. So I bought a new toy Only a wee 12T chappy, but it'll do me for now. With that setup, I dog leg'd the shifter more until I had decent clearance, checked to make sure 5th and reverse were good to go, then banged the centre console in for good! My bumpers finally arrived back today! However, I'm quite disappointed in the rear bumper...looks good in the pic, and might look alright on the car, but up close you can see heaps of ripples in it. It doesn't actually look like it was panelled all that much. I did think the job sounded cheap when he told me the final total on the phone. On the plus side, the front replica bumper fits really well, and looks really good with a decent chrome plating. On the underside, I put crush tubes in for the rear swaybar mounts on the chassis...I guess the AE86 has captive nuts or something in there. I took a pic to show the hilarity of my welds, where you can quite clearly make out the point some slag dropped down my sleeve phone pic ended up too blurry though However having the press made short work of the swaybar bushes! So much easier than trying to drill/burn them out! I've also made a start on my exhaust! Have ordered a shorter resonator and some more bends, and will hopefully finish it off tomorrow night So close I can taste it! Oh, and given I have to take the manifolds off to change the flange on the extractors, I'll take the opportunity to fit this Much to my neighbours delight, I finally finished the exhaust tonight. Ran out of gas on Saturday, so had to wait til today to finishing welding it up Its tucked up quite close to the floor, as ground clearance is pretty minimal Will give it a clean up with the flap disk tomorrow and throw some paint at it. Really need some end caps for my bumper so I can get it all finished! Though the dyno place will close for the year at the end of next week, so it won't be getting done til January anyway Reduction gear starter motors sound crazy!
  19. November 2012 So over the past week I've made some really good progress. Dash frame all mounted back in, and testing the electrical stuff. Everything works, bonus! With that out of the way, I could finally get the carpet in! Though the trim bits I've collected over the years are a bit manky looking, so I gave them a bit of a tickle up...photo doesn't really show how oxidised they were. One cleaned up vs as they arrived Pro tip - cutting compound is magic for cleaning plastic trim pieces up. I also realised that the door aperture seals were still original and brown...they would look totally arse with the rest of the interior. So I went on the Rare Spares website and ordered new ones. Spendy, but they arrived the next day. I also thought I should finally retrim the parcel tray, as it was certainly looking pretty haggard, as well as also being brown. Before After With that out the way, I finally got the carpet laid! Underfelt glued in place as per instructions, then a few hours of trimming/pressing/shagging about. Looks awesome All thats left to do is fit the two outer rear seatbelts, centre console and handbrake lever (Oh yeah, I bought a factory black one off TM the other day!) and we're finished on the inside! Been plodding away at all the little fiddly bits still. Jesus handles all cleaned up and in, ditto sun visors. Finally swapped over the door lock rods (had changed them when I was planning a different style of lock knob, so had to put standard ones back in ) and put the new window winders and door handle surrounds on. Door cards definitely need to be retrimmed at some stage, its just too much black with everything how it is. Rear seat belts are in, had to swap to a different type as I couldnt bring myself to cut holes in my C pillar trims Mucked about with fitting the gauges too, I cut out a section of carbon fibre sheet to mount them in in the centre console. Looks alright, will certainly be better when its fixed properly and clean! And they even match! Still waiting for my bumpers to come back too 2 1/2 weeks to til my dead line
  20. October 2012, pt2 Hahaha, you know it - f@%k those heavy ass trailer rims! Tyres got fitted up today So over the weekend, I'll measure up the springs, and get something softer/taller which will drop it and keep them captive, solving two problems in one hit Look mum, no hands/axle stands Will finish welding it up tomorrow night...my welding helmet shit itself, so its just tacked together, eyes closed style Then I'll drop them off to the powdercoaters, and finally FINALLY send these bumpers off! Can't wait. So I've had a rare combination of time, money and motivation this month, so have actually got shit done! Made up a pretty line from the booster to the manifold...got the hose finishing clips off TM, while not being as nice a finish as proper AN fittings, they look a shitload better than just having hose clips on there! So all bar a catch can, the engine bay is all done! I've put in some long hours in the garage this week finally fixing up the interior loom. When I initially deloomed it way back when, I missed out a few plugs which I wasn't entirely sure were needed. Also with the addition of the extra electrical bits I've added, it'd gotten into a bit of a state. Started out like this Fast forward 6 hours.... So now I can get this interior put back together at long last! New springs arrived today too...they're not as low as I would have hoped, but realistically I can't really get any lower without getting even shorter shocks, and then I'd have next to f@%k all travel. Must be getting old, function over form Its still a 20mm drop over what it was though. Mandatory on bumps pic: Also got some new softer front springs too, should make it a bit nicer to drive on the road...250lb vs 390 the T3 kit came with. Bumpers are at the electroplaters still...they rang me and said my front bumper is pretty badly pitted, and may end up being too thin to use after the acid bath. Struggling to find a replacement!
  21. October 2012 Not too much been happening sadly, been flatout busy with work and my sideline business and family etc. STILL haven't finished the bumper mounts! I really need to get my A into G, I need to get these bumpers sent off to be rechromed fairly shortly...there are 11 weeks left in the year, and I know the workshop who's dyno I'll use for the run in will close before then. Have bought a few neat bits and pieces along the way though! Pretty stoked that the hinge hasn't (yet!) broken on the console. Back in March I think, I noticed there was some surface rust on the inside of my valance...it actually looks like the dog pissed on it, and corroded the inside. Lovely :shooting: I took it off with the intention of giving it a bit of POR15 love, but ever since then its been too cold for it to do. Finally got some sun the weekend just been, so gave it a bit of a lashing Undercoated with silver, then black over the top. Ought to be pretty sweet now. Before I reassembled the interior, I hit upon the great of dear of assholing the stock external regulator, and using a Bosch RE55 reg. Its tiny in comparison, roughly the size of a pack of matches. However its not a direct wire up...have been nutting out how to wire it up, and still keep the charge light on the dash working. Finally gave up, and went to a local sparky to get a hand. Will wire that in over the next week days and see if it works as planned! Also swapped my Equips for these They're wrapped in Toyo T1R 195/45/14's. I'm actually pretty happy with how it looks at the front, but the rear guard gap makes me sad. It may settle a bit when its loaded with fuel and whatnot, but I may investigate a wider and taller profile tyre for the rear. 185/60/14 actually fills the guard well, but I don't think they're legal on a 7" wide rim.
  22. September 2012 Some little bits: Took half of TNZ's stock of grille clips, now my grille/headlights actually sit nicely Stuff back from the powdercoater And my rear seat finally back from the upholsterer :bananavictory::bananavictory::bananavictory:: Guess I need to pull finger and reassmble the interior now!
