  1. oh yer mean, yea he just said. have to see if the spline fits aye
  2. hey slink1 are you buildin the skid car? and karl was doin the driveshaft and that for u?
  3. you need to get a sierra clutch too bro, then take your escort flywheel to the machine shop and get them to redrill it to fit the sierra clutch, should be pretty cheap to get machined tho. cheers Matt
  4. yea this ones not actually for my car, its a guy building a skid car with LSD and a 2 litre, the single piece is a lot more responsive apparantly so he was wondering if theres a way anyones managed to use one. apparantly the big rubber thingy at the gearbox end of the sierra driveshaft doesnt fit in the escort tunnel too? im not sure of that tho
  5. cheers for the help guys, really need to know how to get a single piece one in there. has anyone done this? thanks Matt
  6. just wondering what drive shaft to use with the sierra 5 speed conversion, needs to be a single piece on. cheers Matt
  7. i got my cam from kelford in christchurh, it cost about $300, its fast road / rally spec which is the equivilant of the bcf3. powerbands meant to kick in at 2500rpm
  8. and if you lighten them too much they can fly apart. and apparently when a flywheel comes apart its not pretty. in the escorts i think some have lighter flywheels than others, we pulled a motor out of one and it had this chunky as flywheel on it, chunkier than any other escort one i'd seen. this was a few years ago and the motor could have been out of an auto one? im not sure tho. does anyone else know anythin bout this?

there was a V6 capri diff in the trade and exchange a few months ago for about $150, didnt get it coz i couldnt be botherd goin to auckland to get it. have a look at http://www.tradeandexchange.co.nz and search capri, they usually got lots a bits
  10. just wondering whats needed to upgrade? im lookin at buyin an old 3K starlet and maybe upgrading to a 4K or 5K. i used to have a 4K KE70 and i know the engine bays are pretty simple but just wonderin do they have the same radiator and does anythin else need changin to do this conversion. cheers. Matt
  11. i had the same problem, it was the vacuum advance on my dizzy. solved by disconnecting the vacuum hose between the carb and distributor. its a pretty half arsed way of fixin it but ah well
  12. i'd only run it on 91 if its a shitty engine you dont care about man and your gettin rid of it soonish. otherwise 96, or 98 for you lucky bastards that dont live on the edge of the earth
  13. haha yea i had to take the center console out. unless you can maybe get one out of another car to fit? maybe out of a sierra or cortina. highly unlikely and would probably need a lot of mucking round.
  14. i paid $110 for my 5 speed sierra box. they bolt straight up to the 1600 escort motor but you must modify the engine backplate but thats not hard. then you keep the escort flywheel but use the sierra clutch. just take the clutch and flywheel into a machine shop and they will redrill the escort flywheel to fit the sierra clutch. i got charged $60 for this. you will also have to move your gearbox mounts back and get a shorter drive shaft. so your probably lookin at, $100 - $200 for the gearbox, $60 - $100 to get the flywheel machined. and then how ever much to get the drive shaft shortened and the mounts changed. also the gear leave is about 10 cm further back than the escort one so you will have to cut out a new hole in your gearbox tunnel. most people just cut out a section with the hole thats already there and then turn it around so the holes further back. also when your in 4th gear and have the handbrake on the leaver will touch the handbrake (who knows why youd be in 4th with the handbrake on but yea) but for the low low price of 3 ten mill nuts and bolts you can convert the box to quick shift, ill find the instructions if you like, its easy and makes the shift a lot shorter. so yea any other questions just ask
  15. the mk1 and mk2 engines are generally the same apart from the mk2 ones are stronger due to various reinforcements. the alternator from a mk2 should fit straight in
  16. haha that wasn't even meant to sound dirty. pretty funny now that i think about it tho. yea it could just mean condensation ran down the dipstick, but if your head gasket blows internally then that's what will happen. if its blown id drain the oil out of that bad boy right now and buy some engine flush oil. then replace the head gasket, flush the engine with the oil then might as well do a radiator flush at the same time. then chuck some new oil in and youll be away. if your head gaskets blown you'll loose compression so your car will generally run like shit. and eventually die
  17. its most likely your alternator brushes are worn out. they cost about $10 to replace. just got to pull your alternator out, unscrew the plastic cover, inscrew the top bit inside and they just fall out. you can buy new ones from repco. i replaced some on an escort just recently and they are super easy to do. white creamy stuff on ya dipstick usually means blown head gasket..
  18. definatly use the 1600 rods man, youd be alot better off getting new oversized 1300 pistons and reboring the block. you can run double head gaskets to bring the compression slightly back down so you dont blow it to bits. the only differnce between the 1600 and 1300 pistons is the bowl size im told, so by having a smaller bowl it cranks the compression
  19. im not sure why its limited, guess they have to control it somehow haha. thats why the new focus puts out more KW than the new WRX's and that coz theres no limit that im aware of for uk cars. crazy law really haha.
  20. the stroke on the 1300 escort motor is more square which makes it better than the 1600 but not more powerfull. its like its better for a 1300 than the 1600 is for a 1600 but the 1600 is still a lot more powerfull and unless your building a competion car that has a cc limit of 1300 then you are completly wasting your time with it. the 1300 pistons can be put into the 1600 block and this raises the compression to 10.5 from memory, and you may have to run it with double head gaskets to aviod blowing your motor, unless your running it on race fuel, coz we all know NZ gets shitty B grade fuel. if your gona port it yourself you have to make sure the exaust ports are bigger than the inlet ports, honestly your much better to take it to a machine shop and they will port it to match your manifolds. those bullshit add's in performace car magazine can boast 20kw increase on wrx's by just adding an exaust because the factory manifolds have restrictor plates in them to stay under the kw limit they have on jap cars. so by puttin on a new exaust will increse them by that much, but obviously the old esky dosnt have restrictor plates so i wouldnt expect 20kw extra, but extractors are cheap and do make a differnce.
  21. so i had a muck around with it, i ended up pulling the vacuum hose that goes from the carb to the dizzy off at the dizzy end and starting it... it went like normal. so i tied the hose in a knot and went for a drive,it went fine. so its obviously something to do with the vacuum pressure at the dizzy. does anyone have any idea what might be wrong here? or should i start looking for another dizzy? ... or just leave it tied in a knot. any advice would be a real help. cheers Matt
  22. so i went out this morning and tried to start it, it would hardly run at all. let out a massive backfire and big cloud of smoke... so i waited a minute and tried again, it farted and hissed and banged and backfired again.... i think i have one sick laser on my hands
  23. cheers guys, i thought it might be a vacuum hose but they generally looked ok. hmm might have to swap them over and just hope it helps
  24. hey guys well as the title says my 81 laser is running like absolute shit. it kidna started happening gradually over a day. now it wont really idle and is running erally eradicly, i think it might be a problem somewhere with the fuel line or carbie? and advice would be great. cheers
  25. i had the same problem on my esky. theres a little screw on the side of the dizzy, loosen this and turn the cap slightly then tighten it and take the car for a run, see if it still happens, keep turning the cap just slightly and see if it gets better or worse untill its sweet
