  1. hmm, that would fit in the 3d scanner to then scale and clone new guards
  2. yeah for sure, will look at Ladapower as they have said they will ship plus I tested their 'economy' surface mail and it was mint. Last time I looked it was about 40usd per panel and 130usd freight Hopefully I can free up the funds soonish cos I hate driving a dented up car!
  3. Boooooo! Grand plan to work on the car all weekend shattered by some twat after leaving her on the side of the road overnight. Spent the morning trying to pull the guard out the best I could but realising its well past my current abilities can't quite see form that angle but its pretty much an open wheeler now, counting my blessings its just the guard and the doors/bonnet etc are still straight(ish) I had planned to order two new guards to make the respray worthwhile but wanted to spend the money to get some panelbeating on the rear end first and sort the panels later in the year, thats gunna have to wait even longer now. Only bonus of the weekend is that I managed to pick up some lowering springs and can't wait to fit them! On the driving side, she doesn't like starting warm so I better trace that, and on a thrash over the port hills last week she was leaning out hard at high revs, would appear the standard fuel pump can't keep up (on inspection it looks to have a slight leak) so i'll throw an electric pump in to confirm.
  4. 100% manual, sit down and have a beer! We had a massive problem with gorse where we cleared a scrappy pine block. Now we have a granule dispenser in the farm truck to deal with any that pop up, battle near to won in 3 years although there were a few knapsacks carried around in the first year!
  5. Really impressed by your gorse removal, I hate the stuff! was any tordon involved or 100% manual?
  6. I could be keen, the 2105 needs a run to stretch the legs break down
  7. Left work early to cycle over to BNT to pick up the cylinders, no luck there, they were the wrong ones for manual adjusting brakes so I rushed home and worked some magic to just make it to VTNZ before 5... Pretty stoked to have the wof but still plenty of work to go, even though the brakes work i'll order in from Russia the correct cylinders just for piece of mind!
  8. Getting closer to the wof, except the rear brakes. After failing I pulled them down and all looked happy, so guessed they still had a small amount of air I bled them and went for a re-check with little improvement. Returning home I had a read of the workshop manual which mentioned automatic adjusters on the shoes, from memory I saw no such thing, so back to pieces again and the auto adjusters were no where to be seen, bugger! Weighing up the options I looked at swapping the backing plates for niva ones with manual adjusters just to get through, while stripping one hub a new problem arose: At some stage in the past the 4 bolts that hold the hub to the axle have been replaced with bunning's specials and were all stripped, so down to edl before work to order some new 10.9s and thankfull I looked that deep (paranoid enough I even used a torque wrench!) After a few calls with gee motors it turns out the wheel cylinders are self adjusting and the end cause is the left rear is seized on one side, but just my luck they are out of stock, BNT may have one so fingers crossed the one they have in stock is auto adjusting and i'll be on back the road this weekend........... maybe!
  9. Oh maaate, I'm keen more importantly the missus is keen, i'll just have to check the plan with the rest of the family incase I need something bigger, but if its just the two of us i'll pm ya in the next day or so and we'll do a deal
  10. Seriously? when the family expects me to turn up in a Lada its pretty much a first class upgrade!
  11. Hello northern folk, The lady and I are heading up to Matakana for a wedding 25-28th Feb and need to rent a car to get there and back from Auckland airport, any recommendations/inside knowledge? Cheers, Nick

    PAINT THREAD

I'm hoping that it will still be better than most knock off guns from supercheap/repco and suitable for my weekend warrior status, I used its big brother of similar vintage to paint my car and while the finish may not be show worthy is still better than rattle cans/ no gun I just need a compressor!

    PAINT THREAD

The boys in the workshop had a clean out of unused gear and amongst I found this old gun, being similar to the one I used to paint the Niva I grabbed it, although it looks like it was never cleaned I managed with a bit of soaking to free the internals and all looks happiness, just now I'm wondering about cleaning up the outside, would paint stripper be ok? or should I soak it in more thinner? looks like it will need a good scrub but I don't want to scratch up the finish if it came to scraping, whats the usual go to clean up mistreated guns?
  14. Came back from summer break to find this in the lounge: Inside is all thats needed before I can head for a wof, seatbelts, ball joints, indicator lenses and a few other cosmetic bits and pieces, wasting no time I began to fit and cross items off the list, first of all, the drive donut: Amazed at how mangled these things can get and offer no sign of damage! all was going well til this In my order frenzy I forgot that Ukraine is LHD, so my new fancy wiper arms are upside down, any Ideas on how to fix these? pulling them apart doesn't look possible from the crimping, possibly heat and bend but then will I be able to patch up the powdercoat to look as pretty as they are now? And the reason for the odd shaped package: for 20usd I couldn't resist some aero, it fits terribly, the finish is horrible, but I have some chop strand in the shed and pretty sure the bogan points can be saved! And on the positive side I went for a wof today, even with 4 inspectors crawling over the car the to do list was very minor, rear brake imbalance, high beam warning lamp bulb blown, sway bar not fitted (opps! my bad forgetting to put that back on!) and what would appear to be a typo in the vin number, looks like somewhere in the system a 7 got confused with a 2 and so I need to call ltsa to sort that out, unless someone has done an epic job of converting a Lada Discussion for tips on wipers : //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/49397-nickjs-1989-lada-2105/?hl=2105
  15. I used them heaps when I was working in Europe, they love them over there! I had never seen them before but the workshop guys told me they were accurate enough to not need checking, laced up many snow groomer tracks (600 bolts per side!) and other assemblies with them and never had any more trouble than the ones I did by hand.
  16. Really wished we could have done a build thread while I was involved, so much learning being done and to have access to any tool you can imagine removed all restrictions on creativity, most of the solutions that came out of that workshop are simply genius! Enjoyed watching the live stream on the day, you guys killed it!
  17. We have one of those in the uni workshop, had a bit of trouble with the original torch, hose crimped really easily killing the gas supply, ended up with a different torch and now runs sweet
  18. Ah righto, sounds like the convection is having a hard time forcing a flow through the bottle, a coil seems to be the way to go
  19. Much awesomes! need more surface area huh, could you drill holes in the gas bottle and weld in some pipe length ways? How much room do these have? could a few people partake or is it a solo kinda deal? just built a bench seat out of some large pallets but this has me thinking one is a good idea for winter!
  20. Borrowed a mig today and did this: Still waiting on the box of bits from the Ukraine, pweeease Mr Postman!
  21. Started a new job for the summer and being an easy bike from home the Niva has been a little neglected, amusingly last time it drove we had to push it through the Mcdonalds drive through on Riccarton road because of flooding (surely another bucket list item for the lady ) sadly I couldn't work it out at the time, some gremlins for sure, so today I had a closer look, taking the air cleaner off I found the top plate of the carb was loose, that can't have helped! but while I was there I checked the float and needle valve before securing everything in place, for now it seems to have helped, idle is a bit rough so might have another slight blockage or airleak to find. Moving on the temp gauge was doing a few odd things so I pulled out my thermostat testing rig: All is happy, nice smooth opening, now to look at another possible temperature culprit, for some reason I've been loosing coolant, i've been passing this off as a radiator leak so made the call to pull the radiator out, give it a clean and see if any solder needs a touch up, once again all happy, feeling somewhat confused and being that I had the whole cooling system open I picked up some coolant flush and ran it through, on heating up the system the radiator cap started spewing out foam.... Left is the replacement Repco gave me when my original fell apart, right is the radiator cap from the 2105, that explains alot! pretty much running an open cooling system the coolant has either leaked out the top or boiled off, will have to start another shopping list from the Ukraine! Merry christmas everyone, hope you all have some adventures over the break and drive safe!
  22. Ceramic fuses, like these? if so they are terrible things, quite often the cure to circuits not working is to wiggle the right fuse as the contacts corrode slightly, pop them out and clean up all the contacts, just don't touch them with sandpaper, you don't want to scratch off any plating, I find a dry rag does the trick for 6 months or so
  23. I've been fucking around with the guages on the 2105 and found the temp gauge strains the engine at idle similar to turning the headlights on
  24. Bit of a milestone, managed to get all of the panel bashing work done last week (minus the welding) so with the wind dying off this arvo I took the chance and threw a layer of red on to se if I liked the colour, much nicer! Waiting on a package from the Ukraine with much needed parts for the wof (And some treats ) so once they arrive its game on! Pic of shineyness: Also the bonnet is back on as there is nothing left to fiddle with in the engine bay and I swapped the sports steering wheel from the niva over.
  25. So planned to get the lada out to a friends to weld up a small patch but the A frame was the wrong size, being that its a 20min drive out to his place I don't want to risk it with no wof/reg, so anyone near to riccarton thats not such a drive able to help out/lend me a mig so I can weld her up? Pic of hole, I have a patch cut & ready to go in
