  1. Yeah, Softstarters / VSDs are great in some systems, but the response time you mention makes the vanes sound good. OR tune the control loop frequency (latency). PID might do it. Cables he's talking about prolly refers to shielding.
  2. All I can imagine is you making turbo spoolup noises all the way home, gong "WHEEEEEEE!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAH"
  3. Are we 100% sure about that? Charcoal was lush. Gas'll be okay, just have to use smokey Jalapeno sauces! Edit: Hopefully I don't screw up a motor on the way out again... Editedit: Charcoal ban: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/64785128/total-fire-ban-across-canterbury-as-droughtlike-conditions-take-hold
  4. I have spent more time repairing a cheap Jaycar toolbox multimeter than using it. Save yourselves the hassle, get one with better leads, and auto-power off.
  5. Ah jesus. I just did that to my Dai. Spent twice as much on the engine as on the car, and have 0.0 extra hp. Is that how that looks from outside my head...
  6. So general consensus, Join QCR Thurs 15th (what time, you bogans?) and then a weekend, say 25th, as mentioned. Too many?
  7. Someone had fitted a standard (ballast resistor type) coil to my car. Because they run on less than 12V through the ballast resistor, and my car doesn't use a ballast type system, it was running on too many volts, and drawing too many amps. This was chewing out my ignition points, which are small to start with. It was making tons of spark, but that's not a big problem on a low compression 2 stroke anyway. I replaced it with one of these, and all is now well. http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/Bosch-Ignition-Coil-SU12.aspx?pid=0580#Recommendations
  8. NZ post computers had forgotten that 40 year old cars don't need continuous licensing, so I spent 25 minutes on the phone to LTSA, who did remote "maintenance" on the counter I was standing at, so, cheap old car license is mine! That saved enough money for a coffee, but the engine has a bit of a hesitation which is trying to spill coffee in my lap. I think I've got that sorted on the drive to work. And wow, I need to vacuum the car / change the carpet. (Engineering solutions R us). Bonus points if you can work out what radio station I'm rocking on the AM.
  9. SCH is normally for the electrical properties, and PCB for the physical. If you're drawing a physical layout, try using using a PCB file? Most PCB editors have dimensioning functions. What package/software, BTW?
  10. Oi, can we get an admin in here do deal with the MS paint lunaticks
  11. GIT is a bear, but bloody good when going and you get your head around the differences to normal VCS. By the way, there's a 0 day exploit on the windows today. Update ASAP
  12. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram-air_intake From elsewhere: ...discussed this in class one day. The professor started with the basic equation for dynamic pressure: And everyone agreed they understood how that worked. So then he had a student come up to the board and work out the pressure at various speeds. The punchline is you have to go 170mph to get half a psi of pressure. Yes, this is just for non-compressible fluid, but the basic magnitude is there. But: sportrider caption said: KAWASAKI ZRX1100: As a test control, we fitted the Pi System to a non-ram-air-equipped motorcycle. If you think figures like 17mb seem insignificant, take a look at how much vacuum is present in a regular airbox and you'll realize even that amount of positive pressure can make a huge difference. With a pressure of -27mb, it's obvious that power gains can be realized by converting that vacuum into positive pressure. 13. Saw this guy speak last Monday, here's a previous talk: Kiwicon 7: P0wning the Christchurch transport system
  14. They killed the KillaCycle, and are going to retire it and build a new machine with AC gear. It's last run was here in Ruapuna (one 1 only of its 2 DC motors):
  15. Yeah, looks like they didn't kill it at 0:29. Plot spoilers, eh? (Also, madman at 0:32 looks like Hugh Keays-Byrne, reprising his role as Toecutter! Cool!)
  16. Oh, and is it too early to start planning for a MadMax group outing?
  17. Had a chat to the rebuilder guy in Kaiapoi, he'd manualising a gearbox for the 400hp P76 in his Stag, to play with when he retires in 4 years. Sounds like our kind of bloke.
