Battery and alternator thread

Right so how do they deliver currents? Do they turn charge on or off depending on battery voltage or do they supply a variable current depending on needs

My understanding is very agricultural but this is how I figure it in my head. I was an mechanic not an auto sparky - LOL.

 

If the battery voltage drops below a certain voltage (say 12.2V) then the regulator closes the circuit and energises the field which then creates current and charges the battery.

Once the battery is at the upper limit (say 14.7V) then the field is de-energised and the alternator free spins.

 

The field being energised is controlled by the regulator - which can be internal or external to the alternator.
