Bantam
Brought new electronic dizzy and coil. Fitted as per instructions but escort wont start. Rested spark plug on block and it has a good spark. Had No1 piston at top of stroke, timing mark at TDC, dizzy rotor pionting to No1 lead on dissy cap. Few back fires up through carb. 180 degrees out????
ProZac
Maybe No1 was at the top of it's exhaust stroke, and not compression... In that case, yeah, 180deg out.
M_C
If you put thumb over #1 plug hole and turn engine with socket should you feel compression as it comes up to TBC compression stroke and not on exhaust stroke?
Llama
As above. Also make sure you don't need to add an extra ballast resistor or something.
Bantam
Just back from epic bike ride. Will try that in the AM thanks
ProZac
If you've changed to electronic ignition, you'll need to remove any ballast resistor that was in place. The electronic unit will need a good 12v supply to work correctly. It's typical to change to a 12v ignition coil at the same time, and remove any ballast resistor. That way you power both the coil and the electronic unit from the same good switched 12v source. Escorts aren't one of the car's that runs a really long ignition power wire that forms a ballast resistor purely due to it length, are they? If so, you'll need to run a new, beefier, shorter switched 12v supply.
bigmatt4
escorts have a special ballast wire built into the loom remember too that escorts have a 1,2,4,3 firing order not 1,3,4,2 like 90% of other four cyl engines
Bantam
Sorted, as per instructions above. Seems to work well, just need to fining adjust timing with light. Thanks.
