Rings or valve seals? How does one tell?

i use a leak down tester...get the piston to tdc and test it,then the same for the next...

take the dip stick out,remove the intake pipe/airbox/rocker cover.. if theres leaks you can hear the air pissing out with a hose to your ear or a stethascope....do this when its been running...

air from the exhaust- exhaust valve leaking

air from the carb/intak- intake valve leaking

air from the dip stick tube- rings fucked

also check the perimeter of the head gasket and round the rocker areas....

cracks in the head can also cause shit like that

From my own experience;

Jaguar - Nakkered valve stem seals.

- Starts fine

- Wont smoke at idle cold or hot

- Smokes like a James Bond special after coasting down the Ohope hill in 3rd.

- Compression is acceptable, maybe even good!

Legacy (old engine) - Worn rings

- Blows a bit of blue on startup

- Smokes lightly when idling cold, clears up when at hot idle

- Smoked massively when getting the revs up past 3,000.

- Compression was real bad on some cylinders and getting worse on others.
