Tips for gasket removal

If you have the manifold off and out of the car - then the wire wheel on a bench grinder will do wonders for you.

If it is still in the car and you can't be fucked pulling off the hoses etc then use a sharp blade to get rid of the majority of gasket then get a block of wood and a length of emery paper (or coarse sandpaper) using the wood as a sanding block sand all the remaining gasket off..

Personally, I wouldn't use a power tool of any kind on the mating surface of an alloy manifold, unless it was a large linisher or surface grinder

You can purchase cans of gasket stripper, which work well. Essentially they are paint stripper so if you have some paint stripper then perhaps try that and a scraper (not a sharp one).

If you do damage the surface then you can lap it flat again using a sheet of glass as your working surface and full sheets of Wet'or'Dry sandpaper. Spray CRC onto the glass and both sides of the sandpaper and you will find the paper sticks to the glass. Place the bare manifold onto the abrasive side of the paper and carefully slide it around in an oval motion to lap the mating surface flat again.
