Ke36
remaking one of my bent coilovers up, cut the old coilover sleeve off and that slips over the strut no worries and will just weld it at the bottom my query is, is it ok to butt weld the top of my strut tubes after cutting them down or does it need to be a slip over aswell? its just the top inch or so with the bit the retaining nut screws into
Simon
I would just butt weld it man. All that bit is doing is holding the shock in the housing on shock rebound. EDIT: Which I guess is one of the main parts haha. Meh, might pay to butt it then weld another bit over the top like a sleeve.
Ogre
Ive seen them butt welded and thats how ive done a few.Never had any issues so far.Like Simon says...the main force would be from the shock on rebound.
bubblegoose
if you wish to be anal, cut the tubes out from the bottom of the stub (big ugly factory arc weld) then drop it down and reweld, this is how i did mine. but 90% of the home shortened struts have been done the way your thinking. with the threaded sleeve over the top of the weld aswell to stiffen that area up, this is how i did z181200's
drftnmaz
yea as long as the point you weld the sleeve is below the join on the strut (ie on the unmodified bit of the strut) then its sweet
Ke36
yea its only the top bit so i can put the threaded section for the gland nut on, sleeve sits below that chur
