two_days_late
Hey guys, I'm just gettin my motor ready for paint, i've stripped most of the old paint off the head with a wirewheel in the drill but wanna clean up the block too. What should i use to clean this up before its painted? Do you think turps will do? its been cleaned up at the engine rebuilders but theres still a few signs on oxidization and general grime on it. Also need to strip the old paint off the bellhousing so if you could recomend a good paint stripper for use on iron that woud be great. Any other tips for painting it would also be appreciated, just spend $200 on paint for the motor and box. XR6 Blueprint blue 2k paint, should look good if i do it right! Requiemk
buy some prepsol/wax and grease remover from a paint shop should clean off all of that.
Unclejake
Assuming the motor is out of the car just attack it with ordinary household paint stripper. BTW I never spray my motors - brush is a much better way to go IMHO unless you are good at masking
two_days_late
Cool cheers guys. another person said that brushing it should be sweet too as the paint just evens itself out as long as your carful. i have an etch primer, primer, color coat, and clear coat to do though. do you still think i'll get a nice finish off it or would it be worth paying a spray painter to do it properly? The paint was pretty expensive so i wanna get the best job i can!
Unclejake
Sheesh! Sounds like you are going the whole hog Is the paint heat proof? I would hate for you to put $200 worth of paint onto an engine just to have it burn off. Also - there is no point in going to a mirror finish on a cast iron block as the casting is already rough and can not be polished
two_days_late
Haha yea tryin to anyway, i figure if im spending thousands buildin the motor i might as well spend another $200 and try to make it look pretty. That brings me to my next problem, the paints not heat treated but i talked to a few spray painters around town and a lot of them said it should be fine on the block and gearbox. A mate also painted his motor and gearbox a metallic color with non heat treated paint and its still fine over a year later. I think im gonna just take my chances and brush paint it myself, then if it burns off i'll look at hpc coating or just painting it black with heat paint. I've got a really good quality etch primer here from the local PPG shop, but im thinking maybe i should at least try finding a heat treated etch to use instead. and make sure the motor never gets too hot! Unclejake
The block and gearbox should be fine. the head above the exhaust ports will be where it burns off. I use Hammerite and just brush it on - but it looses its gloss after a few heat cycles.
two_days_late
Oh right that motor does look nice. I'm still wondering whether i should take my chances or not coz im really keen to go with this color. Dam paint! Cheers Matt
Gaz
Ask Jezza what his paint is like on his escort. he painted the block blue same colour as his car. username = HtwnEscortboy or sumthng. Also use a brush like Jase said, way better cover.
two_days_late
Sweet, did he use heat paint? Will do some forum searching now. EDIT: Shit his cars the same color mines gonna be, and with the same wheels (the TSW's). He mentioned that for the block they got an engine enamel mixed to that color, but the guys at PPG here didn't know anything about doing something like that. Dammit. Gaz
Oh true didnt know that. Nice wee car that one is. he doesnt run the TS dubs. They dont fit under gaurds
two_days_late
Yea his cars looking real nice, i've got that color paint to do the block, head and gearbox, rest of the engine will be polished and perhaps some small bits done in acid rush (the spew green yellow color also on the newish xr6's). Might have a go at brushing on the etch primer tonight, will see what the whethers like and if i have time to finish prepping it all. Cheers Matt
Gaz
Yeah I know acid rush, almost painted my escort it for a while. I dont think acid rush will go with the blue tho will it? I also dont know about painting paint thats made to be sprayed on with a brush.. I dont really know tho.
two_days_late
Yea not to sure if it'll go together or not, will have to sus that out later, Blue and yellow seem to suit so it might be alright. Im pretty sure it'll be fine paintin that paint with a brush, the heat is still my biggest worry haha. Cheers Matt
QCADTA
if you wanna clean grime, oil and crap off get a couple of cans of hdx, bad as fuck for you, if you smoke near it it turns to nerve gas or something and paralises your lungs, but dont let that put you off also removes oil stains out of concrete
two_days_late
Where do you get that stuff from? i just grabbed a can of standard degreaser and a tin of paint stripper so i'll see how i get on with that. Wanna get some primer on this thing before it starts to rust! Cheers Matt
Guest wax
*mostly unhelpful post - one step from spam* i cant actually understand why youd paint the engine, its like if a body builder wanted muscles on his heart and liver. or maybe its like tattooing the inside of your foreskin... yeh im gunna go with that analogy.. sounds just about as painful. but yeh, i was thinking, if this all doesnt work out, you can get heat paint in a few primary colors in a fairly cheap spraycan... mat black engine ftw. peteretep
one of the cooler engine paints ive seen was cast iron paint, basically it made the metal shinier but still flaky etc
Guest wax
yup, thats what im talking about, we only brushed off the dusty flaky rust and oin it went, was painting those chimnea things
