Guest escortpartsnz
Hey just after a bit of help, need to work out the ratio of a esky diff have heard you have to count the number of teath on the gear wheel is that right?
CaMpylobacter
count the teeth on the crown wheel (biggest gear) and the pinion (gear that drives the crown wheel... then divide the crown wheel by the pinion.... for example.... 33 teeth on crown, 8 on pinion 33/8 = 4.125 = 4.125:1 ratio.... Gaz
Or if its still in the car. Hold one drum still. Turn the other drum exactly 10 times. Count the number of times the diff flange turns....(It will be something like 19.4 times) Double this number and divide by ten. Likely ratios are 3.54, 3.77, 3.89, 4.11 (If it's a standard Escort diff, then you can expect it to be 3.89 or 4.11)
Defective
sorry for the hijack, but how do i tell if my diff's a LSD? i heard something about if you spin one wheel the other one should turn at the same time or something?
esky boi
Yep thats right, with a normal diff when you spin one wheel the other one will stay still/move only slightly. With an LSD both will turn, and there'll be abit more effort required to turn it too.

RT
get a wire brush and clean off the crud until you find the tag that says what ratio it is.. I'm guessing you already tried this?
Ned
was gonna say that too, most/all diffs will have the ratio stamped on the housing. but then again, it couldve been changed too.
