Engine won't idle

Well I started the pinto up for the first time today 8), but... it has to be run at at least like 1500 rpm, to run smoothly/stay running (even when its warmed up)

If I take it much below this, it sounds like a rotary and just about stalls, and at around about 1000- ish rpm itll just die..

However, with the choke half closed seems to help (sort of), so it probably just needs a richer mixture at idle right?

The carb ran sweet on a standard 2 litre.. but I have a (supposedly?) mild cam - FR21, and running about 10.5:1 comp.. so would that cause it to need a richer mixture at all?

I was also thinking it could have something to do with the cam timing? :? but I dunno, because it fires almost straight away and runs really well above 1500 ish :? so ive run out of ideas, I need advice

depending on the adjustment of the choke it actually increases the revs aswell hence the reason it would run better with the choke out or so it seemed.

what are the specs on your cam? mine sounds like a rota when its idling but the cam is lumpy as hell.

play with the mixture settings on the carb and see if that helps

Hmm yea true. Um the cam's an FR21, its meant to be reasonably mild I think.. yours is a BCF3 aye? When it idles like a rota is it like real rough and about to stall or does it still feel reasonably smooth?

How many rpm does it idle at?

But yea I might just have a play with the mixture settings and see if that helps.. What would u reckon about the cam timing? Spose it would be sweet since it starts up fine and shit aye?

it would run absolutly fine on 96 my escort has higher comp and has no problem with 96, 91 would be a rpoblem though but i cant see that as beiung the problem behind his idling troubles.

mine idles at about 1200-1100 and pulses nicely like a rotang (wish it was) as soon as i drop the idle it doesnt like it but doesnt stall check to make sure you have the right firing order, when i put my dizzy back in i got it 90 degrees out or 1 notch so i have to move the leads to shifgt the firing order but its all sweet, that may be the problem?

Yea, re-checked the timing and firing order just before, all seems to be in order, and there doesn't appear to be any vacuum leaks.

I might try some slightly bigger idle jets on the carb, and have a play with the mixture screw when I start it up again (probably on Saturday, when I get an exhaust...) also turn the idle up abit too, and it could be an Idea to put some fresh 98 in the tank aswell I guess, because 96 in there has been sitting since I took the 13 hundy out.. (about 3 months I think)

Ill let you all know how that goes. But until then, im open to more suggestions

If the fuel is 3 months old that will be it for sure, My gemini had gas that was bit older than that and it surged up and down real bad at idle had to adjust the mixture to compensate, but then my oldman said it would be the gas put 20 bucks in and it was sweet, had to adjust the mixture back aswell. Also happened to my lawn mower didnt mow the lawns for like 2 months

i have never came across stail petrol , ive had cars with fuel over 5 years old that ran ok after bein started after all that time , id say the idle jets mate as this was a problem on my 1620 x-flow when i started it for the 1st time,.
