Got the dirty old mk5 cort... thought i would set the timing... found out it was about 2 degrees to advanced so iset it at 8 degrees before TDC as stated in the haynes manual. But the car seems to run and idle alot smoother but seems to go a bit slower....? thats wierd aye?... i noticed the distributer cap was pretty fucked as well though had white shit on the contacts and looked pretty worn.. so i cleaned them a bit and stuff could that be the prob?...

Cheers

Jeremy

Have you try opening the points up abit? that will make it go abit faster.

i had a mate with one of those timing lights he used it on my cortina made it go crap as took me awhile to get timing back to where i had it. had it abit advanced. but idle fine and went quite good but then again it was semi-worked engine also you try changing the carb settings? make it run rich will eat abit more gas but will make it go faster!!! :D

i dont have the cortina anymore sold it but keep it in the family. Dad has it now lol ended up getting me a 1991 subaru legacy haha and at the moment im looking at doing a 2.0L conversion on a escort

The timing in the Haynes manual was from when the cars ran different fuels than nowdays, as such with today's crappy fuel it's more of a guide than anything, slightly adjust (usually advance) the timing until it's running nicely.

Corrosion or build-up on the dizzy cap contacts could also be a problem, but if you sand them off with very fine paper or scrape them off and there's no big chunks missing out of them, it should be fine.

hi there, 2 litre cortys are a fairly hi comp engine. on new gas they ping like f#%@ that is why it idles and starts better with the timing advanced but runs like shit with your foot down . try easing the timing back or try some octane booster or avgas. having white stuff in the dissy cap certinly wont help either
