Sup yo.
So a group of us are doing another shitbox challenge thing next week. This year, buying and modifying cars for less than 1500 bucks in the theme of the Golden era, aka, early 2000s.
So we're off on a roadie in our creations next Tuesday, cutting another lap of the south island. Gonna be staying in Nelson 8th November, hokitika 9th, queenstown 10th and invers on the 11th. Thought it'd be worth a post up here if anyone local wants to come out for a brew and a yarn when we're in each town. Will probs do a really shit park up and cruise in each town for a laugh and to be general pests.
4/5 of the cars we're using. And there's an EK civic hatch as well.
Come hang!

Aren't PT losers meant to be a diabolically shit vehicle as well as being hideous?

I mean of course you've already seen this, but GTi Pulsar whomps the competition.
Oh yes. Always love me some best motoring!
Also ralliart colt is another solid option. Provided you don't pay fresh import spec tax like 10-15k like those jokers are asking.

This would be a bit of fun I'd imagine. Not a terrible price given the mods it has really. And all certed.

My vote, even though its not a "hot" hatch, would be a ZC31S Swift Sport. Stupidly fun cars to drive, super reliable and cheap to run. Out of all the cars I've owned and driven, its up there as one of my favourites.
Is there much tunability/aftermarket go fast bits for them? Looks like they're a good chassis, but straight line performance is a bit disappointing. Which I'd imagine I'd get bored of pretty fast haha.

Love a good Peugeot, but getting thin on the ground and prices are creeping up. My fav is the 306 gti6
Also, look for a warm Fiesta or Focus, they handle great. There are some obscure, fast Citroens out there too and they’re nearly always dead cheap if you can find one and are sick enough (and I think you are)
I would fucking love a gti6 or even an s16. But they just seem to have all vanished now eh. Yeah missed out on a saxo vts the other week although it was dereg so no real use as I still want something usable on the road. Any RS clio would fit the bill well, but again, so damn hard to find.

Not exactly "hot" but as far as bang for buck its difficult to go faster for cheaper than a b series honda.. (although prices tend to be creeping up these days)
Mivec Mirage doesn't seem to handle or go quite as well... But I guess it depends on what you want, I'd be looking for something that already had a rollcage for a track machine.
Yeah B series stuff has gone pretty crazy in value though. Watched a couple auctions where b16a EG Hatches sell well into the 5 digit mark. Which is not really where I'd be sitting. Mivec mirages appeal purely cause they're a shitload cheaper (rs mirage cyborg sold for 4k a couple weeks ago) and although they're not quite as good as the honda alternatives. They're really not that far behind from what I've seen.

What's the best bang for buck hot hatch type thing these days? Something that can be used for track days etc.
Kinda tempted to sell a couple things to fund something along those lines.
Been looking at things along the lines of pug 206 gti180s, cyborg (mivec) mirages, vzr pulsars etc.

Surprisingly the peeps that would have bought turbo legacies and foresters years ago haven't caught on to those.

I like the cubic, 7 seats lwb
But I believe all are cvt, and many people are weary of Nissan cvt.
Funny you say that. @Slacker_Sam. and I just swapped a ded cvt out of one of them a month or so ago. They live up to their rep.

Having had a 2zz runx for a bit, I could imagine the wagons would still be pretty fun. Definitely a gr8 motor and GHFWTA. Only thing that irked me about them is the power was really only top end. It was gutless af up until like 5k then it came to life. Not really usable for round town punting.
Just gonna slap this in here as they're dirt cheap now, post 06 lancers with the 4g69 mivec engine, especially in povo ES form go much better than they should. I reckon they'd be dead even with our k24 wagon purely cause the honda is so obese.
