I've been doing alot of panel work for others lately which has definately held up any progress. But this has to be a 2024 goal so I can get onto some other projects.... Pulled down the gear/transfer box. In the grand scheme of landrover things, this one isnt too bad (though not mint), its one of the later boxes with syncro on all 4 gears which is kinda nice. The 3/4 syncro dogs are the most worse for wear, repros are ~$500 so I'm going to go dig through the gearbox bin of the local wrecker to see if I can find a decent original. Based on the condition of the low speed gear of the transfer box, I bet this spent alot of time in low4 with the farmer mashing between 3 and 4 to get across the southland mud. Also, since I'm taking this back to original running gear I've been chatting to NZTA about how to go about it. With this never having a cert plate and that I can prove it was petrol originally from the chassis ID, it seems relatively straight forward.

Only surpassed by the Mercury 'Tower of Power' https://fb.watch/o1ddIWZe7P/

Cool, love a nostalgic ski boat. Very similar to the 'stingray' made by CBS in the early nineties (they likely adapted this design), there is one which is always up at Wanaka when we do our annual camp

Playing catchup with this build thread.... The parts truck turned out to be a good buy.... replaced the ignition system, a squirt of oil in the cyl and some fresh fuel and the engine fired mostly right up. Its technically an early, low comp 2.25 for a SII, so matches the era of LR its going into. Likewise pulled the wiring loom out intact and a bunch of other smaller pieces which I'll used. Sliced the rest up with the new plasma cutter for the scrap man. Old running gear (Nissan diesel) has been sold, to a guy who drove down from Blenheim in a S3 no less Decided to use the front guards from this also, as they are uncut and in generally better condition (but still need some crack/dent repairs) The profile of S2 to S3 guards are mostly the same, except for the obvious difference in the front where they put the lights in the guards. Continuing with manufacturing new sections of those areas, its easy enough to cut out the rivets and replace with my new S2 portions. Its a handy swap to make since its getting very hard to find the early S2 guards in good condition, while the rest are a bit more abundant and cheaper. Need to get back into some steel repairs to return this front end to original, then back to mechanical.

Somewhat dropped this into a few other threads... A decent parts truck same up for sale in Invers which I couldn't say no to. Where many would see something suitable for the scrapper, I see original petrol running gear, good condition front fenders (will swap from S3 headlamps to S2 panels), a front apron, better condition bumper, a wiring harness and a whole bunch of misc.... I took the water blaster to it when home, and while it is rusty as hell, it has the essence of farmer ute. Note the steel box tubing on the steering wheel and the uni joint shaft - went through the cab window to another wheel mounted on the tray so the cocky can put her in low box and drive around a paddock throwing hay off the back. Big question is will this run... it turns over at least which is a good sign. Time will tell....

Looks like I'm going back to original... Gotta go pick it up next weekend.

I’m looking for some advice… so I’ve tracked down some deals on original running gear…. Have yet to see if I can get this injection pump fixed. If I can it’s probably the similar price to reverting to original. what should I do….?

At least I get to go back to the parts I really like - panel work. These front guards are pretty bad but typical for age - fill of dents, bog, cracks, holes etc... There is no point to try and fix what is there, its a pretty simple panel to make from new. Note that there is only a factory pressing for the park like and not the indicator (these were added by local dealers depending on the requirements of the export country. Getting more of the hang of welding alloy, its not easy and filling in holes is a prick. The lower section of this side guard is pretty crumpled, it got most of it out, and about half way through filing it clean. I cut the flange section off as it was pretty thin/bent and in the way, I'll fold up a clean section and weld it in.

Here's last nights result. TBH these front fenders really do need a good clean up, there are plenty of holes which need filled, cracks which need repaired and wrinkles taken out - gives a good excuse to use my english wheel. Also still replacing some brake line components. Likewise the cooling system is a bit sludgy so a clean up wont hurt. The inner wings were also virtually non existent with all of the modifications which have been made, so will fab some new ones up. Evidence of the boo boo

We'll take a poll, probably Outram is better. They've just revamped the pub but havent been there of late.

I had a F**k f**k/throwing spanners moment while working on this last night..... was cleaning up the governor housing on the inj pump and when re-tightening I must have had it a bit askew and I've gone and cracked the pump housing.... Decided to screw it and rather than going for my WOF and selling it, with this set back I'm going to pull all the front panels off and fix it all properly (I only blew over it in the green). Hopefully I can somewhere find a housing to swap the internals over with.... failing that I could look for a 2.25 landrover diesel + box and put it back to original and toss the declaration papers. A few steps back to then go forward....

Pretty much, I'll have the BBQ out. Aiming for a very chill environment - my neighbours are already a bit dark with the new shed now shadowing their section....

This is 100% my thinking. Except the use of a U-shape would be easier, I was thinking 2x half moons.

Hi All I've been scratching my head for a solution to fit one of the 'standard' bike racks to a Euro swan neck tow ball I know of the options to swap the ball hitch and/or the bike rack but neither are cheap and I have this combo already sitting around. The bike rack connection works by forcing down on the bar tongue and since none is there for euro style it doesnt work. I'm thinking the solution might be to fab a removable collar to fit around the ball to take the job of the tongue. Anyone done this or seen similar? i.e. This (which I have) to this (this)

Further details: Sat the 8th July Meeting at the Mosgiel Pool carpark (Te Puna o Whakaehu) which is on the end of the main street just before the Silverstream bridge. Meet at 1pm for 1:15pm sharp departure, havent picked a route yet but will at the time - few stop off spots along the way etc... Returning to roughly the same area to my place for some social beers, BBQ and general OS yarns. BYO
-
Outram, around 1/2 way. Love that economy

Do the opposite, leave the residue (iron phosphate ) on to prevent the oxidation and then rough sand the panel back just prior to paint.

Not really.... There is only one road which comes close to the rail in the gorge, its just a crossing and road out there is gravel. See https://offthemainroadnz.com/2017/04/21/hindon/ But the road goes through a part of a gorge near there so somewhat similar country - its a good drive.

@Kerry-TGI Go here, they will do blast + 2k epoxy for you https://www.blastingandcoating.co.nz/contact Where I got mine done, not too $$$
-
Further details.... We may be thin on the ground with OS cars (myself included) but have 2x options for route (views welcome), or just go for a BBQ/yarns.... Option A Option B

Cool, exec decision... We're going to go for the afternoon of Sat the 8th July. We could take a short car run round George King Memorial Drive, then across the Taieri to go over Saddle Hill road before back to my place for some beers, BBQ and yarns - something super low key. Attendance potentially... @azzurro @a.craw4d @danger @Truenotch @TimShadboltfan27 @kiwi808 @igor @xsinclairx @vivaspeed Link whoever else in I might be missing?
