im not really in a position to comment on the viability of either head, but i would have thought that if you were primarily interested in building a race car, then the tried and true method has got to be a winner. experimenting with something and being a bit different is all well and good, not to mention fun and interesting, but you've got no guarantees of a quick car - which the XE head would appear to promise. as for powerbands, presumably the XE head still came in a viable street 'sports oriented' car - hence i have no doubt that an appropriate selection of cams and headwork you would net whatever result you desired in this respect.

how much power is the piazza pushing? could look into toyota F series live axle, seem to handle the jandal pretty well behind some big power engines and LSDs are plentiful though mainly aftermarket - most stock LSDs are either torsen or rooted or if you have a raging 80hp even a T series would be a good option, can get a bit spendy as this is whats in AE86s but once again TRD LSDs are highly affordable (have seen secondhanders on TM for ~600)

i believe brendan at A1 turbos manufactures bellhousings for rwd conversions also and 3S engines can be found in rwd format in altezzas
