Last nights progress - nothing visual but mechanical progress was outstanding.. The Colonel has been runing a little rough lately - can't make its mind up whether to run on 4, 5 or 6 cylinders. Pulled the s/plugs out found all kinds of crazy temps/detonation/build ups on the electrodes, so I chucked a new set of plugs with points and condensor at it.. tested again runnning smoothish but not brilliant, so checked timing - total mech advance (without vacuum) 50 degrees - WTF with vacuum 65 degrees total!!!! Pulled distributor apart found missing one spring of the advance weights, (thanks to UJ I fitted an old Cortina advance spring - urgh.. FORD!! ) cleaned and greased bushes etc and chucked back in. Final specs - initial timing 7.5 degrees, total mechnical advance (without vacuum) 20 degrees, total with vacuum 35 degrees.. FTW thank you very much!! End result - a car that accelerates like fucking MADNESS (like I was blown away and I can feel every singfle one of those factory 130 horsies) and no more detonation, hard acceleration is now smooth as, light throttle a little miss every so often -Will replace coil with GT40 tonight and see if that fixes the light throttle. Me = shiny glee, and caffeine makes me feel happy..

if it the oldschool round type with a coverleaf like pattern in the middle - hammer a 21-22mm impact socket on it and undo - then smack the locknut out of the socket in a vice..

First check you have the correct radiator cap on there - if you have an overflow bottle you will need a scavenge style rad cap - ie Tridon p/n TRS6 (not a TRC6 - they are for non scavenge types) A temp gauage needs to have water around the sensor to get it to work - it does not pic up the temp of air.. Next I would not rip your heads of just yet - like Uncle Jake said - it is most probably a simple fix - if the motor has only done 1500Km I would retorque the heads (cast iron heads you retorque hot and alloy heads you retorque cold) Heads do settle in quite a lot and retorquing is critical (well I believe so, some people would disagree) Also if you think your rad is not up to the job - get a bigger one - no need for an expensive alloy one - copper ones are better - just heavier. Then fit a couple of thermo fans on the front of the rad (check they are blowing not sucking) and keep a decent size mechanical fan with a shroud on the backside of the rad.. I do not believe in discarding mechanical fans unless you are racing - and I know your wag is a cruiser not a racer.. that is all - KTHXBAI
